I've noticed that intelligent creatures aren't being butchered or even brought to a stockpile, despite my entity having appropriate ethics set to acceptable. What's up with this?

Those that I'm trying to have butchered have been roaming predators (haven't tried any invaders yet). They're of the same composition I've been having problems with earlier, but unintelligent creatures of that composition are butchered normally now.

It seems at the moment that Toady broke something with the code regarding ethics and butchering sapients. It'll be rectified, eventually.

Sorry for this basic question. I notice that muscle and offals only have [EDIBLE_VERMIN] and [EDIBLE_COOKED], yet as soon as they are butchered, they are able to be eaten w/o cooking. What causes this behavior?

how hard is t to make an adventure mode reaction to turn a unit into an item, while still preserving their stats, personality, companion status, and being able to then turn this item back into their unit form with another adventurer reaction?

if this is easy enough i might mess around with a shin Megami Tensei mod

Functionally impossible. You just can't do that.

Maybe when dfhack gets updated.

It would presumably be possible to turn a unit into an immobile vermin, which you could then pick up and put in your backpack - would that be good enough? It could be kept in that state indefinitely and, when returned to its initial form, would be completely healed of all bodily injuries.

...hang on, that sounds like pokemon.

Shit. Is there a way to force loyalty using syndromes? Or, if the immobile vermin is [INTELLIGENT] and you're able to convince it to join you, would it stay aligned with you after being changed back into its original form? With the new personality-changing syndromes that "convincing" could be made more or less a foregone conclusion... hmm hmm hmm.

I don't think you can change vermin into things, although I'm not certain about turning things into vermin. Anyway, can't vermin just "disappear"?

Well, PET is an acceptable token for an item, which creates a tame vermin of the desired CREATURE_ID:CASTE. A reaction can accept or manufacture an item with the PET item class, which refers to a vermin. So, theoretically (I have no time to test, must go to work!) you can use reactions to create and destroy vermin at will, which may or may not be tamed.

Sadly, you can't do much else with vermin except eat them. :P

You actually can do some stuff to make creatures into items and turn them back at will.

To turn them into an item: shove a sword into their brain.

To turn them back: use a RESURRECT interaction.

...hang on, that sounds like pokemon.

SMT predates the first release of pokemon red/blue by 5 years, 9 if you count SMT's super-series Megami Tensei.
Unlike pokemon, with animal-like creatures and gym leaders with an elite 4+champion+(maybe a rival too) at the end, SMT features various mythological creatures, even extremely obsure ones, major gods as bosses, and a fight with the forces of YHVH or lucifer at the end depending on who you sided within in the game. before you try to simpify the games into good vs evil, alllow me to explain. It's more about law vs chaos, both are pushed to the extreme and neither are meant to be good options. Law wants the world to stop and people to be put in hugboxes/killed (depending on which game you're talking about). Chaos wants the world to be in a state of continous war and fighting, where only the strong can live. YHVH is not very nice in these games, in SMT1 he has japan nuked, and he generally seems rather insane, (not that Lucifer is any saner). You can take a neutral route, albeit it's usually rather hard to, and it often leads to you fighting BOTH final bosses.the series has alot of spin-offs, the most popular of which is persona, which is very, very different in terms of mood, gameplay, difficulty, and story to SMT

sorry for the over-explanation

To turn them back: use a RESURRECT interaction.

How about a temporary syndrome that transforms them into a tiny creature with an instantly melting head?  The creature will die and you can then carry their corpse.  To take it out, use a resurrect interaction that targets the container creature.  It all depends on whether or not creatures return to their original form after resurrection...

You can even tie the transformation to a liquid glob attack so that they have a chance to dodge it.

They don't, otherwise the limb-drop spawn trick wouldn't work.
