Roll to Survive a War
« on: November 30, 2015, 09:18:35 pm »

The sudden roar of jets and sudden shaking of the landing craft snap you back to the present. Looking up you quickly notice Sergeant Vanburen walking towards the exit ramp as he starts to yell over the comms at your unit.

"Alright, listen up Maggots! We're coming in hot on our target so be prepared for heavy resistance, and a hell of a lot of incoming fire meant to kill your lazy asses before they can find some cover. Our objective is simple, our division is the spearhead to crack the enemy defenses and form a foothold in the city to clear the way for the main assault. A lot of you will die, but let me warn you now, if a single one of you tries to flee I'll put a bullet in the back of your skull. NOW UP, AND AT IT MAGGOTS! WE GOT A WAR TO FIGHT!"

As soon as Vanburen finishes your unit starts to unbuckle themselves and grab their gear to get ready for disembarkation. You feel nervous, and a sense of fear as you finally pull yourself to your feet and pick up the rifle that had been slotted into its holster next to your seat. Its quite a piece if you do say so, a sleek full size assault rifle with selective fire, reflex sight, and an attachment rail at the front for your combat knife in the case of close quarters combat. Exhaling you quickly check the clip and flip the safety off before stepping into line behind two other soldiers, and grabbing one of the straps hanging down from above.

It takes only a moment for you to notice a change as several new sounds start resound into the compartment, and within moments you recognize the sound of gunfire followed by a sudden low thud that turns into a roar as something close by explodes. Out of the corner of your eye you notice Vanburen reach up to his comm-piece before suddenly frowning.

"This is it, the second that ramps drop haul your asses out of this drop ship, and make for cover. Our first goal is to force our way into the building straight across from where we're being dropped off."

In sync with Vanburen's words the ship shakes one last time as it drops to the ground, and then the exit ramp drops with a thud revealing a street straight ahead with buildings on the far side. You take notice of several cars abandoned along the road that could act as plentiful cover heading towards the skyscraper up ahead, and lines of tracer are clearly visible a few stories up as heavy weapons spew fire into the air above. Within moments your unit starts to rush out into the street heading for the scarce cover provided by the cars ahead, and just in time to as moments after Vanburen follows the last man off you watch as a rockets screams its way into the dropship bay.

You watch on in horror as the dropship goes up in flames, and shards of shrapnel fly everywhere barely missing several of your squad-members as they rush into cover. Seeing you staring at the flaming remains of the dropship Vanburen clasps you on the shoulder, and asks,

"What's your name soldier?"

Spoiler: ??? (click to show/hide)

I'm trying something slightly different here, it's going to be a suggestion based RTD without any set in stone stats or anything like that. Results of actions will be based on the roll, my judgement, and any applicable factors taken into account (the weapon, the armor, etc.).

Yeah, that's not going to happen. Please keep the name away from very clearly being a reference to someone banned from the forums. :v

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

"Marvin 'Buttons' O'Jackson, sir."

The Sergeant eyebrow raises as you reply to him, but he quickly recovers his rather neutral expression as he replies,

"Well then ... 'Buttons' you've just earned yourself quite the honor, soldier."

You're somewhat confused by the man's words as you stammer out a reply.

"I .... I have, sir? Wha .... what honor did I earn, sir?"

The grin that spreads across Vanburen's face causes you to shiver as you realize that whatever he thinks you've earned is going to end very badly for you ...

"Oh, why only the greatest of honors, Maggot. You get to be one of the first people to charge through the entrance to that building up ahead in order to claim glory for our grand, and powerful nation. Now get your ass moving before I have to stick my boot where the stars don't shine."

Startled by the Sergeant's words you turn and stumble out of cover as you start to rush towards the entrance up ahead with Vanburen already parking out orders for more of the unit to head in alongside you. As the other five people that will be breaching the building with you make their way out of cover you suddenly come under fire as bullets smash through a window on the third floor. Spurred on by the sudden desire to not get shot you all run like hell and surprisingly make it through the smashed glass sliding doors without getting shot, beyond is the wreck that used to be the building's main entrance.

Tables are overturned, chairs smashed, and corpses scattered all around what looks to be like the reception hall of some corporation as a sun logo emblazoned with the letters 'Sun Co.' lead you to believe. On the far side is a reception desk that stretches across most of the far wall excluding two gaps in the very corners, one leading to door that says 'Stairwell' and the other one that says 'Elevator'. Before you can really take anything else in the silence is split by the sound of gunfire, and you watch as two of the soldiers to the left of you jerk to a halt with blood splattering in all directions.

Without even looking for attackers you throw yourself down towards a nearby upturned table hoping to make it to cover only to feel a sudden sharp pain go through your right leg. As you collapse into your seemingly flimsy cover you look down to find your leg is missing a decent chunk of flesh, and blood is already starting to pour from the wound. Using your semi-safety from behind the table you quickly examine your surroundings to find the remaining three soldiers from your unit on the far side of the hall taking up cover behind pillars, and upturned furniture as they fire of small bursts towards the direction gunfire is coming.

Today really isn't going well for you ...

Can we see any other cover, closer to our attackers?  In any case, yell "GRENADE OUT!" and throw a rock on a high arc towards the enemy gunmen.

A quick peek around the corner of your table shows a few support pillars wide enough for you to hide behind that continue on towards the receptionist desk, and stairwell doorway where your attackers seem to be hiding. You think you also see some overturned furniture you could use as cover up ahead, but are forced to pull your head back into cover as one of your assailants fires a few rounds your way.

Use the old rock grenade trick to distract them, then rush to closer cover.

You quickly pick up a sizable chunk of fallen stone from the grown, and chuck it over your table in the direction of your assailants. Almost immediately after you throw it you hear someone on the far side of the hall scream, and the incoming fire stops causing you to jump up and start sprinting towards a pillar closer to the reception desk. Within moments you're at the closest pillar to the desk, and your squadmates have already moved up with you, training their weapons towards the desk.

You hear movement from behind the desk and bring your rifle up just in time to fire one burst into one of your assailants as they take a peek over the desk. Before his body falls back behind the desk you swear you could see a bloody wound on his hand that wasn't caused by you. Before you can ponder it much longer your allies open fire into the stairwell door which is met by several screams of pain.

Still tense you train your gun towards the door as two of your fellow breachers sweep forward to check behind the desk, and door. You let out a sigh as one of them talks over comms,

"Jackson reporting in, entrance hall is clear Sergeant, you're free to move up."

Can we use something to create a tourniquet? If so, do that on our leg before it gets worse.
