Weird, even for Dwarf Fortress
« on: November 29, 2015, 06:02:02 pm »

So I load up my game, intending to do a bunch of stuff in Therapist. A friend stops by unexpectedly, so I leave the game on pause for several hours, and then later come back to it. I do all the stuff I was planning to do in Therapist, commit the changes, and press unpause. It's maybe a month after my 1st wave of migrants have arrived, and I'm still setting up my initial workshops down on z-5.

One of my dwarves goes out to the pond that my wagon had been resting on and starts channeling out a larger pool, hopefully so that I can get all that water-logged stuff. Naturally, he starts the wrong way and then freaks out about standing in water. Then my FPS drops to 4-6 and my announcement log starts getting spammed.

From my gamelog.txt:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Apparently, something happened down at z-150 that cause the entire region to collapse.

That is indeed very peculiar.  Are you aware of what dwells in the dark places of the world?  If you are not, I would strongly recommend abandoning this Fortress so you don't spoil it for yourself.  Maybe post the save so others can examine it.

Oh dear.  The circus came early.

Post the save, but then, yeah, abandon fort.  Or turtle EVERYTHING.

Dig deeper and investigate!

EDIT: Or alternatively, reveal map and investigate.

The map revealed itself when the entire region fell at least 2 z-levels.

Where would I post the save file to? I decided to "retire" the fort mid-earthquake.

When you say 'revealed itself', you mean you can see everything across every layer? :o

Protip: statues cannot be made out of wood unless they're artifacts. If you see what appears to be a wooden statue outside your fort and it's not an artifact, destroy it immediately.

Yep. When things fall, they reveal themselves. In this case, it was the entire map that fell.

Well, technically, only everything above z-150 fell.

Interesting! You've got to upload this map. I have to see this for myself.

Meh. Since I retired the fortress, you have to un-retire it, which advances the clock by 2 weeks and reset the data. You could see a Crundle wandering around above ground, but that was about it.

This exact thing has happened to me multiple times in my latest 40.24 fortresses. Surely it is a bug.

Seconding the request for seed/settings. This must be seen.

It happened to me midgame but another forumgoer brushed me off saying I'd just pierced the fun stuff.
