elf/dwarf/human tallow?
« on: November 13, 2015, 01:35:35 pm »

i was setting up a stockpile for tallow for soap making when i saw this

tallow is made from fat which is made from butchering

how dose one butcher an elf, dwarf or human?

if an elven city ever comes about near my fort i would like to know how to turn them into dinner when they see what ive done to this ex-forest

Modding, or playing legitimately as elves, which can happen through weird bugs.

i.e. I'm pretty sure it requires your culture to accept cannibalism. Pretty easy tag, iirc, and you can just do it as elves if you make 'em playable.

It also may have been a holdover from earlier builds.  One of them had these underground hell dungeons with chained prisoners.  I think you could find sentient creature meat and fat in them.

Strictly speaking, it's not a holdover. The game sees fat materials defined for those creatures(which, if memory serves, autocreates tallow materials), which means that the stockpile list will show entries for them.

And as far as I know, it's hard-coded that you cannot butcher sentients, regardless of your civ's ethics.

What about dead sentient bodies? Or sentients butchered in adventure mode?

You can butcher sentients if you change your civ's morality.  It's not hard, but it's seriously annoying and I don't recommend it.  Being willing to eat elf steaks doesn't stop your dwarves from being horrified at the sight of their future steaks, or your bone carvers from being horrified by the leftovers.

Does this work? Dwarves getting bad thoughts from their sentient meals? If so I think I've got another modding idea...

Yes, I mean the corpse that is in line for butchering.  The post-butcher bones also give bad thoughts, and so will the skin until it is tanned, after which it no longer matters.  The meat and fat (and tallow) do not.

Obviously the butchers want to tell us something. My guess would be:
"By armok, what the circus is that thing?!" or, after work, "Why is there so much crap in there and not enough bacon?!"

Are you sure the bones give bad thoughts? The goblin/elf/human... bones I've got after "natural" butchering are depersonalized (i.e. "goblin bone(3)" rather than "Snodub Grazko bone(3)").

Yes, I'm sure.  I had eat_sentient_other marked as acceptable for two separate forts, and the most stressful job in the settlement belonged to the bone carver.  Random dwarves walking near the bone stockpile would often cancel jobs because: horrified.  I once checked the bone carver's thoughts in DT to see where all her stress was coming from, and she had bad thoughts from death like x125.

Once the bone is crafted into something else, it no longer generates bad thoughts, just as skins stop generating bad thoughts as soon as they are tanned.

Sorry for being persistent, but I then assume your bone stockpile contained butchered bone only, and not cartilage and other slaughtering refuse?

I've had regular fortresses where I dump all sapients into a separate (quantum) refuse pile down a hole, but I still allow the bone carver and bowyer to get down there to recover the bones resulting from natural butchery. I found the stress generated by the body parts was basically offset by the dwarfgasms from masterworks production. Now, when the general stress level in the fortress started to be somewhat elevated, I changed the prisoner execution methods to atom smashing and magma pitting, but the dorfs digging through the remains weren't the ones with the highest stress, despite haulers not seeing what was down in the hole.

Yes, it only accepted bone.

I could tell when stress was induced by when low-Discipline dwarves would stop in horror at what they'd just seen.  A low-Discipline bone carver would carve some elf bone bolts, step away from the workshop, then be recalled to the workshop by the repeat order and then stop in horror at the bone still on the workshop floor.

If you don't believe me or want to test it yourself, feel free.  All you need to do is change [ETHIC:EAT_SAPIENT_OTHER:UNTHINKABLE] and [ETHIC:EAT_SAPIENT_KILL:UNTHINKABLE] in the global raws to ACCEPTABLE on both counts and generate a new world.  Assign an easily-stressed dwarf to bone carving to accelerate the results.  Do let me know how relaxed bone carving becomes for that dwarf.

Is it possible to change ACCEPTABLE to something even better more horrifying, like MUST_BE_DONE or something like that?
