another release in less than a year?
« on: November 07, 2015, 02:24:34 pm »

Toady is already talking about the next release. Did he say why he is able to get another one out so quickly? Is it because he had to do that big re-write for the last release and now its faster to punch out new material? It looks like the new release is related to Inns and character personalities right?

He seems to do atleast 3 major things in a release. Do you see 3 tasks in here that would take us to .43?

He's actually only barely just cutting it under the usual major release cycle --

.28 was 2008
.31 was 2010
.34 was 2012
.40 was 2014

Individual values, personality, song/dance/play/performance, further integration of books..  it's hard to say exactly how many ticks the version number is going to get, as they're relatively arbitrary.

I'd say the biggest factor in this release seeming "faster" is the fact that he doesn't want to go so long between releases.

Yeah, he said he didn't want to take longer than a year between releases anymore.

The stuff that was originally intended for this release has been cut in two parts, and it seems artifacts/initial magic(?) goes into the next one, with the second part of the inn one somewhere later (seems to be dependent on getting an economy going). We'll see what happens, though, since things usually don't end up exactly where originally intended. It currently LOOKS like the next release is imminent, but snags (or strange developer moods) can happen so it won't appear this year after all.
Also, the time between releases depends on how you see things. It looks like a bit less than a year from 0.40.24 to the next one, but it's more like 1˝ year between 0.40.01 (?) and the next one. To be fair, the 0.40.X cycle included a fair number of additions/modifications, so it was far from just bug fixes.

Is there a detailed list of features that will be in the next release?

You could scour the dev log on the main page. There are probably some tidbits hidden in the FotF thread, as well.

These are the things I know of:
The next update contains fort mode temples (vampire/werebeast curses) and taverns (using mugs and goblets, potential death by alcohol poisoning), as well as scholarly (libraries/teaching/writing) and performance (dancing/poetry/music/festivals) stuff.

The improved zones that temples and taverns use will allow us to assign rooms to positions (like the mayor.) Books can change the readers ethics somewhat or contain knowledge (doesn't do anything yet, IIRC.) Visitors for the taverns and libraries, as well as multiracial forts. A bug that was affecting traveling armies' ability to cross rivers will be fixed, which should help improve siege frequency. I think that's all of it so far. No telling when it will be ready, but it looks like Toady's in the bug fixing phase, which probably indicates sometime soon.
In addition to:
  • Paper making (use old clothes / papyrus / etc.)
  • Invasion/monster population cap setting in init
  • Mercenaries / monster hunters / bandits / diplomats in taverns
  • Tag for limit on number of items in stack processed per workshop reaction
  • Dwarves wear trinkets again
  • Fulfilling needs (to argue / see animals / learn / etc.) in Fort and Adv Mode
  • Changing values by arguing in Adv Mode (and being changed by accepting an argument)
  • Foreign weapon stockpile setting?
There are probably other little things I left out when summarizing in the quoted post.

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.

Although Festivals will be worldgen only for now.

Also taverns/visitors involve zoning to keep certain people out of certain places. How flexible that will be I don't know, but it could be the answer to all the 'Urist don't go over there!!! Doh!' issues that some people seem to have.

Oh, and rumours in the inn (presumably similar to diplomat world reports) possibly, maybe, but perhaps not including maps. Which would be very nice.

And no more 'break'. Dwarves go do stuff they like doing instead.
Urist cancelled pull lever. Looking for an argument.

I'm more excited about the fact that Dwarves will use mugs for alcohol--there's actually a reason to be swimming in mugs now!

How far we've come since Boatmurdered.

Will dwarves use any old mug laying around or will they carry them as an inventory item like a waterskin?

Toady mentioned mugs being handed out at the tavern, but not sure if that means drinking is now solely confined to taverns. Probably not, gotta have that mug of ale with breakfast every day.

I'm imagining Monty Python's "Argument Clinic" carried out by dwarves.

Urist McClient, Axedwarf: It was inevitable.
Urist McArguer, Therapist: No it wasn't.
Urist McClient, Axedwarf: Yes it was!
Urist McArguer, Therapist: No it wasn't.
The Axedwarf hacks the Therapist in the head with his <*steel battle axe*> and the severed part sails off in an arc!
Urist McArguer, Therapist, has been struck down.
