How to set up a burrow for one civilian?
« on: October 31, 2015, 11:36:07 am »

I tried setting up a burrow for my "king" as bait for some inactive zombies.
He is the only civilian assigned to this burrow and I've set all his duties to inactive; yet he still hides in the burrow with the other civilians, rather than go to the burrow I've set up outside for him.

If I activate the new burrow, all the civilians rush to the new burrow.
So, how do I get just one civilian to go to a new burrow?

If I understand it correctly, you want to have both a civilian alert burrow AND a citizen selection burrow active at the same time? I don't believe that is possible, as I think a civilian alert overrides a citizen one.
To set up a citizen burrows, draw the burrows as usual, but then use the "c - add citizen to burrow" function on the burrows screen to select one or more dorfs.

You COULD try to use both a civilian alert one and a citizen one by extending the civilian alert one to include the are covered by the citizen one (the area does not have to be connected to the rest of the civilian alert burrows). This means any of the civilians could go to the disjoint part, but none of them should have any reason to do so unless there is a job to do there (and that goes for the king as well: he won't go to a burrows unless there is a reason to. You could disable e.g. road building on everyone except the king and order the building of a piece of road at the target to get him to move there (and then you don't need a citizen burrows).

Make the king a one man military squad and station him there. Active military dwarves don't obey burrows.

Deboche's advice would work had he not been the king. The king cannot be drafted.

I got tired of the self-appointed "king" and his imperious demands so I arranged a little meeting with an atom-smasher.

King can be drafted just fine. Not sure if that's intended behavior.

I can't draft my king, because he doesn't show up in the list. He's a miner from the starting 7, but the other miner shows up, and all the other 6 starters are the first 6 ones in the list (and I've gone through the list several times). How do you draft the monarch Shonai_Dweller?

When appointing a duke/baron/count the bugger immediately deserts, but can be redrafted easily enough.

Vanilla DF. My king turned up when I reached the requirements and I noticed he had a silver axe and a few kills to his name. So I set up a royal guard, 3 elite soldiers plus the king (no uniform, just an axe) and the queen too. They would hide down in the king's chambers ready for a last stand whenever there was a siege.

Why that worked, I'm not sure. But he seemed to enjoy himself. Gained some axe skill and quickly swapped his useless silver axe for a fine steel one.

It would have been great if I could have worked out how to have him only be in the military a couple of months of year and do other...'king things' the rest of the year.

The only difference I see is that your king arrived as king, while mine took the job as king over a revived civ on the one year mark. I use the Lazy Newb Pack, but I don't think there's anything in that which would block the king (trying to start without DFHack doesn't allow the king to be drafted).

And yes, it would be nice if you could have part time militia that didn't insist on performing individual training rather than civilian work during the down time.

Hmm. Requires some Science I suppose. Will check DFHack settings - don't recall a 'can draft king' option though. Don't think I have the save any more, so will have to play through until I get the king again.

-Just to check, I only added my king to a squad, I didn't make him militia commander (which I imagine wouldn't work). Is that also not possible usually?

I tried both to have him join an existing squad and to form a new one, and in neither case did he show up in the list. The DFHack options I have enabled are "Pure Bugfixes" and "Performance Tweaks", but if DFHack is disabled I would expect neither of those to have any effect (and it sounds a bit strange with a bug fix that prevents the king from enlisting. Many a king have historically led their troops personally, especially in older times).

I was thinking I might have something in DFHack enabled accidentally which allowed me to draft the king. Generally I turn off pretty much everything except manipulator and TWBT.

But yes, king in the military should be a thing. Ideally I wanted the elite bodyguards to train all the time and have the king show up two or three times a year (plus during sieges) to let his trainers beat him up (and train axe skills...). But I've not quite worked out how to do that yet.

Militias constantly train unless you schedule them to train. If you fill the schedule with 2 units training all the time, the other 8 will do things.
