Evridiki takes a moment to pause, not having expected this line of questioning.
"You know, DNA... your genetic makeup. Your genes. The things that decide how your body makes itself? And, uh, yeah, I've kind of gathered that you're not a changeling by the lack of husks about."

[SOLDIER First]

A rather generous beat passes.
"My makeup what?"

[Powder Miner]

Evridiki sighed and put a hand to her forehead.
"Alright, so, you've got a thing in your cells called DNA, which basically is the instructions for how your body was made when you were born and how it makes itself now."

[TheBiggerFish]

"It's a blueprint for people.  And animals and plants."

[SOLDIER First]

"There's laws for it? I thought it just Happened. So what does getting mutated do, replace your DNA?"

[Powder Miner]

"It changes sections of your DNA, yes."

[TheBiggerFish]

"...It changes it, yeah.  Like overwriting a tape.  Only with more... Dire consequences.  Normally at least, mutations are catastrophic, things like cancer, or birth defects.  Your world has a bit too much sci-fi so...I don't actually know how it would perform in your world but I know the big stuff is all because of radiation which is really not how it should have...."

She goes off on a muttered tangent.

[Powder Miner]

"That... isn't true. Catastrophic mutations are rare, most mutations don't have any real effect, though there are some key gene blocks with some key mutations that can and will mess with you. Everyone has some mutations from conception, anyway."

[SOLDIER First]

"My world has just enough sci-fi, whatever that is, thank you very much. Also this sounds like the thing that was gonna get you punched." Alanis hears knuckles crack behind her
"I mean, I hear of all sorts of weird gross mutations but I never knew how they happened besides "tons of rads"."

[TheBiggerFish]

"He's talking 'sieverts of radiation' - it is sieverts? - mutation.  Not 'transcription errors' mutation or 'background'.

But yeah, you're right.

[SOLDIER First]

"No. It's rads. A rad is a unit of radiation.
How much that unit is I dunno, but they exist."
Wilson shows her the "Rads" dial on his Pipboy, which wavers at a comfortable 138.

"We mess with DNA pretty commonly on the Leviticus -- it's entirely what the geneticist does, trying to isolate the powers from the genes, oftentimes, whiiich usually ends up poorly."

[TheBiggerFish]

"I know you use rads.  I don't.  Because your unit is adrift in a sea of 'no actual physical basis' and mine is actually well-defined.

"How come you know so much about my world if you've never been there? I would definitely, completely recognize the name "Alanis" next to the word "sorceress", also whatever that means, and I haven't seen you there either."
