Cave crocs are easily the best egg producers if you have cavern access.  I think you can solve the elk bird problem by just hauling them off to a pasture after they've laid their eggs.  The rumor that a nest has to be undisturbed with the mom on it for 3 months is incorrect.  I've caged mother birds moments after they laid eggs, and as long as the eggs remain undisturbed in the nest and are fertile, it doesn't matter if the mother bird never sees them again.

I thought I was reading this a different forum, either RL or Adv. mode.

Yeah.

"I survive mainly on fruit, nuts, and vegetables.  I'm a vegetarian.  Do those foods count?"

"How do you harvest in Adv. mode, DUH?"

I'm funny that way.

---------

Anyway, as for the actual question of this thread, I tend to harvest some fruits and nuts in the beginning, but any walled-off sections of land quickly become filled with grazers and farms.  I guess I don't really need it.  However, in my "seven-dwarf clothier's outpost" or just a fort where I've turned off sieges, I use a lot of fruit.  So much that I rarely need to farm for anything but cloth.

So ever since fruit was introduced and multi tile trees I haven't done any farming at all. I just zone three or four max size fruit picking zones assign a handful of herbalists and forget about food and booze. Dwarves bring in more fruit than I can ever use and there enough of a variety that i never  get bad thoughts for the same food over and over. with  a 80 dwarf fortress 4 years in i had 6000 food 3000 booze and had never farmed. Farmers go directly into the military.

What kinda elfhuggin', treehumpin' hippie crap is this? Armok knows dwarves aren't supposed to climb trees.  He gave us axes instead. Trees are fer beds, ballistas, bins, and burnin'.  I suppose you'll be talking about how great growin' yer armor is next.

Fruit and nut-bearing trees are entirely too common and bear too much food.  Hell, even willow trees give fruit.

I like the variety in fruit that we can get. Having a large selection of booze is always important in a new fort, in my opinion.

The only trouble with trees is that they tend to inhibit my courtyard building. They're a bit too close to my walls, so I either can't build a floor to make them more easily walkable (and thus make it possible to use them as ammo stockpiles for marksdwarves for siege situations), or they're too close to the outer walls, which makes me think that building fortifications would allow invaders to just climb into my fort.

I'm not totally sure how climbing works in this version of the game.

New trees also seem to grow pretty slowly.

But the dwarfs don't actually climb the trees; they climb stepladders, some of which are made from trees.

While I agree that willow trees producing fruit is ridiculous, I do want to point out that fruits and nuts have their own drawbacks in that you have to spare trees in order to continue harvesting them, plus you have to keep your dwarfs from getting cave adapted or harvesting them will result in vast quantities of vomit.

From either the humans or the elves, yes.  In the wild?  No.  But it is handy having another source of oil.

I have some olive trees in my current fort. If you do find them and want to press oil from them I recommend editing out [EDIBLE_RAW] though, dwarves seem to have quite a fondness for the things.

"Suffer not the tree to stand."  Book of Armok 5:17

If Armok wanted Dwarves to climb like that he'd have put a pile of rocks there for a nice staircase.  And he wouldn't have given axes to the chosen people.  Or the knowledge of charcoal.

Anyhow, if you haven't noticed, there's a war with the damn trees. They are absolutely deadly, killing many fine axe-wielding woodcutters. Worse, the damn trees can do what no Titan can do--punch holes in a fortress ceiling.  I bet the pointy-ears plant them all over just for this purpose.  Bastards.

Has anyone ever seen olives?

Yes, in a hot forest.  There are tons at my current fort.

I think I might someday embark somewhere where there are olive trees, set the pop cap to 20, and built a fort entirely around the production and export of olive oil.

Make sure it's on rocky coastline, and build a temple to a Greek god of your choosing.

You need to use an activity zone to gather fruit, sadly the designate plants does not work. That always made me sad because activity zones annoy me for some reason.

I like living on fruit because who cares if it comes off trees? You can make BOOZE with the stuff. Alcohol before tree murder.
