It's that thing where you take a thread that's been dead for upward of 120 days and post in it.

As mentioned, thread necromancy or necroposting is when you post in a thread that has been dead for months or even years. This can be harmful to discussion because first it gives the appearance of an ongoing discussion when In fact that particular one ended long ago, and can give the impression that people hold opinions that may no longer be valid. In many cases it is also bad because much of the time the issue that the original topic was created to discuss is no longer exactly valid. Especially annoying are those cases when all a necroposting does is say "actually..." And then present information that was not known at the time of the last active post in the thread.

Should you run into a scenario like that, it is almost always better to simply make a new thread rather than attempting to revive an old one that is no longer valid.

It's worth noting that, unless something has changed, forum rules explicitly say to post in existing threads for a given topic if one exists, rather than starting a new one.

Elsewhere, its generally been 'if you have something  worthwhile to post, and don't think it would be better to not make a new topic' as far as I can tell.

Further to this, as far as I can tell it's considered better to make a new thread if the creator of the old thread is inactive and/or the OP of the old thread is inadequate/out-of-date.
