Narrative By Trope: The ReReturn
« on: October 09, 2015, 04:33:11 pm »

Credit to Gatleos for beginning and Hubris Incalculable + Digital Hellhound for continuing this wonderful style of game!
The Rising Light is a 2013 film adapted from the 2005 TV series The Falling Dark. It is the second screen adaption, as the first was critically panned due to executive meddling.

It takes place two months after the events of The Falling Dark and is set in the ruins of Manchester.
This film provides examples of
After The End: Yep, but things are really looking up compared to the TV Series.
Eldritch Abomination: The Stranger, the Untamed Stallion, the House Where The Captain Lived... Let's just say there's more of a focus on the Cosmic Horror parts of the show, to the chagrin of some fans.
Friendly Sniper: Slyv switches (Sometimes in a single scene) between this and a Stepford Smiler, due to the unresolved mental trauma from the series.
Norwegian Raider: Why did you do this...?
Slyv: If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

What can I say, I missed these. This is a sequel to one of the earlier Narrative by Tropes. Give the guidelines a glance the first time you contribute. The most basic rule: add tropes and explain how they fit into the narrative.

Oh my.

Sapient House: The House Where The Captain Lived seems to have become something like this. The sounds that come out of it when

Defiant Stone Throw: What kicks off the riot in the climax, courtesy of David.

Put on a Bus: Several characters from the series are absent, implied to have remained in Orkney. The absence of Elizabeth is the most noticeable, since the finale ended on her disappearance.

Posting to watch.

Also, might I suggest [invistext between brackets] to mimic TVTropes-esque spoilers?

That sounds like it'd flow better then regular spoilers. I'll start using that!

Interrupting Meme: Look, unless the Stranger seriously has it in for us, this article will remain as safe as it ever has been--*HUNDREDS OF CROWS CAWING AND SCREECHING*
Batman In My Basement: The situation with David and Mildred Lynch is similar to this, though no-one is actively hunting David until late in the film.
Full-Name Basis: Mildred Lynch. Justified, as post-apocalyptic Manchester has a lot of Mildreds for some obscure reason.
Awesome Music: The piece that plays during the climax (Hang 'Em All by Carpenter Brut) is a good example on it's own. However, when used in combination with David and Slyv's assault on the Museum of Science and Industry, the result is simply incredible.

Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: It doesn't end well for [Randall] when he tries to kill the Stranger. Not well at all.

Those Two Bad Guys: Randall and [Jacob, after the latter's Face-Heel Turn.]

Made of Iron: Not only does Slyv manage to survive [at least fifty bullets from Jacob, but shoots back mere seconds afterward.] Sure, it didn't manage to kill [Jacob], but god damn.

Dirty Business: What finally pushed Randall over the edge (And gave him his trademark Beard of Sorrow and Bad Dreams) was [ stealing the Captain's daughter. ] He still can't understand why he feels so bad about it.
Pokemon Speak: Jacob speaks like this. Since he's still recovering from being brainwashed by the Ministry of Science and Education, he does it to remind himself that he is actually a person.

Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Derek is incredibly paranoid, questionably sober and half of the time refuses to leave the liquor store he's holed up in [but is one of the few people to draw the Stranger's ire and come out mostly intact.]

Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Ember. DEAR GOD, EMBER. And she's considered one of the good guys!

Karma Houdini: Although he fails to achieve his goals in the end, [Jacob escapes Manchester and goes into hiding without ever being paid back for all the horrible things he's done.]

Jerkass Woobie: Derek isn't the easiest person to get along with, but there's no denying that he's seen some shit.

He also has shades of a Stoic Woobie. Even during his flashback to the apocalypse, his only reaction is a quiet 'bugger'. Subverted, because as soon as he reaches the solitude of the liquor store he has a weeping breakdown.
No Biochemical Barriers: Despite her not being an alien, in full effect with Ember.

Hell Is That Noise: The Stranger and his crows.

Lovecraft Lite: The resident Eldritch Abominations do manage to deal more than a little damage, [but they are all either destroyed or weakened too much to be a real threat anymore.]

Alien Geometries: The House Where The Captain Lived.

Hell Is That Noise: The Stranger and his crows.
The Stranger's only line counts as well.
Derek: Gonna kill me, then?
The Stranger: No. I will make you beg for it.
Derek: Aye? I'll believe it when I hear it.

Memetic Mutation: Randall's dancing is a common reaction image, especially when the more absurd wild mass guessing is proven correct.
David: Stop that.
Randall: You can't stop the dance!
David: Stop that.
Randall: The dance will never stop!
David: PLEASE.
Randall: The dance will never die!
*Slyv fires a shot into the air, Randall abruptly stops dancing.*
Randall: Okay, okay. I'm okay now.

Hey It's That Guy: Hey, Tyres is hiding in a liquor store. And Arby's name is actually Jacob. And the Captain was really a vampire all along.

Curb Stomp Battle: The Norwegian raid that kicks off the film very rapidly turns into a horrific meatgrinder [for the poor Norwegians. It's so bad, in fact, that it's implied to have triggered some sort of strange ritual which possibly sets up the whole  eldritch conflict of the film in the first place.]

Lethal Chef: David turns out to be this when he tries to prepare a meal for the Hobo. He eats it anyway to show his appreciation.

Funny Foreigner: Hideaki. It doesn't last long.

Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu: Soon after the Untamed Stallion murders Nanoha, Hideaki finally snaps and spends a solid minute yelling at him and calling him out for being the monster that he is. This goes just about as well as you'd expect.

The Dreaded: Slyv gains quite the reputation over the course of the film, and deserves every bit of it.

Shout Out: A man named Heisenberg who makes recreational drugs in a run-down RV? Riiiiiiiiight...

The Hermit: Hideaki was originally more of a Hikkiomori, but After The End he goes full-on isolationist, with the exception of Nanoha.
Hakuna Matata: Nanoha tries to start one of these after the Norwegian Raid, but considering the context, it peters out.
Nanoha: Cos it ain't soooo ba--~
David: I don't think we're in a singing mood.

Evil-Detecting Baby: As part of Ember's Establishing Character Moment, all the children are playing on the opposite side of the playroom. When she tries to pick up a toy from their side, they all run to the door and bang on it, screaming for help.
Overly Stereotypical Disguise: To hide his disfigurements caused by his resurrection, David dresses and acts as a stereotypical steel mill worker. This is particularly dumb, as there aren't any mills left.
David: Oh aye, I work up at t'mill!
Minister of Science and Industry: Really? Fabulous! I wasn't aware there was any left.
David: Err. It's a whiles away.
Minister of Science Industry: How far away?
David: Err. It's in Edinburgh.

Our Slogan Is Terrible: Loads and loads, as part of Funny Background Events.
Heisenberg's Clarky Cats: Now with 90% Less Vomiting Blood!
"Lemonade" Stand: Psst, it's not really lemonade
