Line-of-Sight Limit (Dwarves)
« on: September 18, 2015, 03:22:20 pm »

I'm planning an arena.  (Hehehe...)  I want my dwarves to always be able to witness the deaths from the dining hall/statue garden in a ring around the arena.

So here's my question: How far can dwarves see?  (Deaths, that is.)  Is there a limit?  And does raising the dwarf reduce the LoS range by an equivalent amount?

If you slaughter animals in your arena, most (all?) dorfs will be fine, but do that with sapient critters and they'll get bad thoughts from it.
It seems sight range is somewhere in the vicinity of 12 tiles.

Probably 15 tiles or so.  I don't know if the Observer skill affects it but I don't think it does.

I don't even know if blindness affects it.  Does anyone know if blind dwarves can admire furniture and the like?

They cna if they are standing right on top of it, basically touching it, if not then not. blind is blind.
Thats why blind dwarfes are... interesting to handle.

Thanks, guys!  It seems that some !!science!! will be necessary to determine the LoS for such deaths, but for now, I will go with about 12-15 tiles.

You can get a hint by looking at dorf/creature encounters on the surface or in the caverns (or creature/sieger encounters when moronic siegers just drift around by the edge rather than move towards your fortress). The time at which either party gets an exclamation mark over them (I assume it works the same in all tile sets?) ought to indicate the position at which they were surprised by the encounter, and thus saw the other party.
