To kill feelings of introversion and anxiety?
« on: September 06, 2015, 11:06:46 pm »

let's just say I keep to myself a lot

let's just say this is actually bad because when on sales you need to explain yourself a lot

let's just say when i encounter a wall in which i have a choice to flight or flee i become indecisive due to introversion

how do i deal with this?

a) You cannot "Kill feelings of introversion" that is basically personality.

As for B... You need to find some more relaxing people to be around. Get your feet wet without diving in so to speak :P

a. More like shutting them down for a moment without even thinking back until AFTER you pull it off.

b. Hard to do when all you're doing is sales, and you can be sure to find some dicks...

Fight, Flight, or Freeze. You Freeze. ("indecisive due to introversion")

You can't kill anxiety and introversion, but you can coexist with them. Anxiety can be re-framed, with great effort and time, as a disquieting motivation, and/or excitement. Introversion is something you work with and around. You won't have hoards of friends but those you do have may be deeper.

Sales is its own matter. Persuasiveness is a thing, and it takes time and experience to learn it and its components: preparation, perception, production, paper, and product. Also, it's the understanding that rejection will happen, to anyone, especially in sales. Sales is a very harsh field, especially in a recession, and with implied and explicit commission base. You really have to understand client pipelines to have a real shot.

This is actually rather heady stuff, and it takes a lot. I'm guessing you're not a terrible person, and happy to assume that. It is a matter of realizing the measures of human interaction and consistently applying them in your life, while dealing with the setbacks.

And, here is the part where most advice sucks, it fails to recognize that your feelings are a real thing to you. Merely saying effectively, "get over it." Does not help. Fear is a real thing in the mind of the person experiencing it, but not to outside observers. That doesn't make it less real. So the feelings of anxiety, of disappointment when you fail (everyone does), and of difficulty are going to be additional roadblocks on your path and you'll have to learn to overcome them. This is an ordeal that is difficult but not impossible to master. The problem is that nobody tells you this.

I know right?

It's like everyone assumes a neophyte to get over their "anxiety" when they don't have a practical gestalt or mental framework to work around. They tell you not to get shy because it doesn't win sales, but they expect you to figure out the secret formula of avoiding shyness, all the while not making yourself look like an idiot, which, let's face it, is bound to happen when you're new.

I'm not sure if I'm not terrible - life is pretty damned subjective at this kind of thing. What exactly do you mean by that?

If anything, I've embodied the philosophy of Sink or Swim. I am going to die if I fail, so my only choice is to improve. It brings obvious results, with drawbacks being ramping depression and the fact that I still also have to do an undergraduate thesis (this Sales thing is my internship, so it's pretty lenient, but I AM pretty damned scared of dealing with people who diss wrong answers - and I have met such people in the course of my internship.

Add to the fact the company I'm interning is my close relative's company as a sort-of-training for after graduation so I can back my brother up in the business field so he doesn't have to do things alone and shoulder the burden, it gets pretty damned stressful when I have to consider making a sale or not, since there's still one more semester to deal with, full of yet-another thesis and school life - stuff that will most certainly put my sales on hold and perhaps the prospects being choked to death by a metaphorical gas due to my "negligence" of turning the "call back" fan on towards the "results" ventilation, you know what I mean?

In short, my absence due to schoolwork will cause me to lose the prospects I've prospected for the company I've interned, which is also smallish and handled by my brother mainly.

I can typically reframe anxiety by convincing myself "I have to go through with it to be done with it.", but introversion...? Damn it all.

My mother recommends St. John's Wort.
(Normally I'd just recommend getting wasted, but obviously this problem occurs at work, so that's out. :P)

I'd drink to remove social barriers, if given a choice. But I have to wear a mask sooo... I can't.

My roommate takes drugs for it and it helped him a lot.  Might be worth talking to a doctor.
