How to make a cavein?
« on: March 26, 2008, 07:00:00 am »

What do you have to do to make a room collapse?  Levers?  Supports?  I want to build a trap where part of my fort falls in on itself when I pull a lever.  What do I need to do?
Thanks!

You need to have a section of ground (or constructed stuff) completely seperated from everything around it. The safest way to do this is to dig a big chamber underground, put a support in the middle of it, channel (or ramp, which is safer) out around the outside of your block, hook the support up to a lever, and pull away.

Alternately, you can just dig the whole thing out, but miner mortality is usually high with this method and (needless to say) it doesn't work well for traps.

I'm experimenting with Channels....think I'm getting closer to a solution!

The problem with cave-in traps is that they tend to only work once.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Well, you *can* rebuild them, it just takes a really long time.

Just wondering, if you carve out the bottom level of the entire map then kick out the supports... after 10 min of lag, will you end up with an empty map with lots of stone on the bottom layer?

EDIT: WHAT?!?  When did cave-ins stop happening due to unsupported ceiling? (I never play with them on, so i wouldn't know)

The 3D version changed the cave-in system so that you only get a collapse if you completely disconnect the tiles from their surroundings.  Toady One has mentioned that he intends to create a more realistic system later.

You could still force the collapse by channeling out a ring on every level.  You'll need to reclaim, though, unless you leave a section supported for one or more dwarves to stand on when you pull the "make it collapse" lever.

Someone needs to embark on a 2x2 with 7 miners and see if they can get this to happen.

Edit: "this" being collapsing an entire map.

Well, you could just set them all to be miners right at the start, bring nothing else, then reclaim over, and over, and over again, until you accomplish your goal.   :D

This brings up a curious question:

What happens if you undermine a cave river source?

I was thinking of something more drastic, but more spoily.

The problem with cave-in traps is that it's easy to collapse lower levels you didn't mean to.

I was considering the ramifications of having a volcano involved in the collapse of the area.

Massive pit of magma.  Reclaim THAT, Mountainhomes.
