You should have walled it in or just stayed away, then placed cage trap later

Didn't the lair have a Hatch Cover? Just designate that as Locked and the denizen can't disturb you.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

From what I could tell, it did not. Either way, he's dead now and won't disturb me.

Do lairs usually come with hatch covers?

I settled on lairs before, the occupants are surprisingly docile.  I spent 2 years in a (world-generated) reclaimed fortress before finding its previous owner.  There was an FB just chilling in one of the back bedrooms the entire time.  Even after it killed the first dorf that walked in hte room, it just resumed chilling in the hallway.  They aren't in "rampage" mode, so they only act defensively.  You can safely wall them off in tight spaces, so long as your dorfs never enter its line of site.

Any time in the past that I've embarked on a lair, it's always had a hatch cover.

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

night trolls have lairs with doors or hatch coves, and a bit of furniture inside. This one was a werebeast, they get unfurnished lairs with no doors. In older versions local residents were trapavoid, so you'd have had to web over your traps or to catch it in .34.
