Dwarves falling through solid walls
« on: August 05, 2015, 08:14:30 am »

Hi all,

Just had something weird happen in my fort: two of my axe lords fell through a solid wall and died (probably falling almost 30 z-levels had something to do with the dying part).

This is the situation:

- My fort is surrounded by a deep moat (~30 z-levels). The barracks are above ground, in the second level:

- Suddenly I get two notifications about two of my axe lords having been missing for a week. I check the log and see that they've been sparring. Apparently they tangled together and tumbled forward:

- Zooming into the location I see both of them lying dead in the bottom of the moat:

How could they fall through the wall? Please note that this is a completely closed room (it has a floor above completely covering it).

You might want to have a look here, or here, or any of the I-don't-know-how-many threads asking the exact same question.

The gist of it is that it's a known bug (see the bugtracker) that causes sparring dwarves to push each-other through walls. The only known workaround is to have double-thickness walls.

Yeah, this "new problem" has been showing up about once/week.

While sparring, dwarves dodge (or are pushed) into adjacent squares. When that square is a wall, they are re-located randomly back out of it - sometimes back to the side they started on, sometimes the other side.

The only known workaround is to have double-thickness walls.

Or anything else that keeps them away from the wall in the first place. A row of statues, or a barracks designation that is not adjacent to dangerous walls, both work just as well, anything that gives them a buffer to dodge/move that is not into the wall in question.

Designating the barracks room to leave a buffer zone will not completely eliminate the occurrences.

Source: my current fort has a barracks 2z-levels up from the ground and the room is designated to end 2 tiles before the walls.  Roughly once a year, with 5 squads sparring in this same barracks, one will charge the other and they will tumble outside the walls.

I'd say the absolute best way to mitigate this is to only build your barracks in rooms that have other rooms around them.

Thanks all. I think I'll just add another level above and create a new barracks in the middle, surrounded by trading goods stockpiles.
