I use dogs for bones, leather, food, and war.

The dwarves do not mind.

You couldn't force the dwarf to kill it themself, but you could force them to watch it die, and then force them to watch it decay to increase the strength of the bad thought. Of course, there wouldn't be much point to this other than making a nice story, but I think the story would be cool enough.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.

IN FACT...

I believe the [Dwarven Child Care Program] relied on this concept of forced puppy death voyeurism to harden it's applicants. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=140588.0

Bay 12 is a place where a normal person's horrific atrocities are commonplace, and are furthermore utilized in a practical fashion to make everyday life easier.

Alternative: make them train it several times over 3 years, let it go wild, enlist in militia.

Alternative no.2:

L=Lever ^=spike trap -=chain X=wall

Assign to chain then pull lever. Heheh.

I'm not sure that's possible with a dog.

Which one?

The first one. They're a domesticated species that doesn't occur naturally so they can't go wild or be trained more than once (for war/hunting).

Ah, didn't realise that dogs don't occurr naturally. Still, any animal will give an extra bad thought if the dwarf who has trained it several times sees it die.
