The "Making Wishes Happen" thread
« on: July 21, 2015, 02:13:59 pm »

As suggested there, this is a thread where people can work together on creating games from the "Games you wish existed" thread.

Spoiler: FREE GAME ENGINES (click to show/hide)

RULES:

For now, I haven't thought of any really tight rules. If anybody would like to work on an idea, make a post along the lines of "Hey, I'm working on this idea" in this thread, and in Games You Wish Existed if the idea is fairly recent. It is entirely up to whoever is working on the idea to decide who they want to work with, if anybody.

IF YOU WORK ON AN IDEA AND ARE UNABLE TO FINISH IT, PLEASE KEEP A BACKUP OF ALL FILES. Eventually, I plan to create a shared Google Drive account where unfinished projects can be placed, just in case somebody in the future wants to pick it up and toy with it again.

This is a huge undertaking as the ideas in 'Games you wish Existed' would all be really difficult to implement. However, I like the idea that these could be stored to work on later.

I'd suggest that a hard rule should be that all code should be thoroughly commented to allow for others to take over easily. Similarly, all resources should be well named and logical.

Even if only small steps were taken it could be a valuable resource repository.

Sometimes I like to re-read the early pages in that thread and marvel at the wishes.

Maybe 10 years from now if this forum is still up. We'll read the first few posts on the games you wish existed and think "lol made that game yesterday on my holopad". Then we'll teleport to work on the planets Mars.

Honestly, Id think this would be better off in creative projects... or at the very least organize here and pick out the easiest ones and start there and then go to town.

Of course, everyone is already working on a bunch of stuff on their own most likely so... :P

-snip-

Very true - but the jump in the last 15 years eclipses the jump from 1983 to 2000. In 2000 most of us were using just smaller versions of the first commercial cellphones. My phone then could only call and send text messages - literally just that! The nokia 3310 came out then, but it would be another 2-3 years before they became properly mainstream. Now my phone is on par with my laptop - hd movies, full 3d games, music and apps.

Once the ball gets rolling, things move very, very fast. I'd expect that holography will eventually turn a corner and we'll go from basic holograms to full 3d in a couple of years. Part of it is stuff needing to be commercially useful though - holograms just aren't that useful. You can't do anything with a hologram you can't do with a screen.

Wish you guys luck. Some of the theoretical games I read about in the "games you wish existed" thread seemed like something many people would love to play.
