Why don't dragons fly?
« on: July 10, 2015, 12:07:30 pm »

I mean is there a particular coding reason Toady doesn't give them flight?

Lets face it, dragons are pretty underwhelming right now - dragonfire is easily blocked by any shields, and they very rarely reach their max size during worldgen.  Dies after a couple of whacks by military, or a cage trap, or a weapon trap, or a stone trap. Granted, most of the semi-megabeasts suffer from being underpowered meat sacks, but this is a DRAGON.  They're supposed to be majestic, winged, fearsome creatures, not undersized lizards plastered to the ground.

Giving it flight, my god, would make it absolutely terrifying.  Dwarves will have to resort to using ranged attacks, considering how hard it is to hit fliers with melee dwarves (fucking keas).  Imagine an entire squadron of marksdwarves firing dakka through the sky as the dragon lights the scenery on fire.  And then Bard comes along with an artifact arrow

Think about it.

Because not all dragons are that one type of dragon. He decided to go with wingless dragons.

Isn't it because dragonfire and flier AI don't work well together?

I do not know if they're still valid or if Toady changed his dev plan entirely, but the core goal #40 had this :

MONSTERS, (Future): Dragon attacks need to be more righteous. Their flying needs to be more of a benefit. Snatching and dropping people should be possible. Would also be good to get the wizards and undead armies from the old fixed-plot stuff back into the mix. There was a time when the dead dwarves and pets would suddenly rise in your fortress, due to a plot event. That might have to wait for magic.

Dragonfire only travels along 1 z level as it stands, so that needs to be updated

This limitation could be good, as it would entail swooping, much more interesting mechanic than aerial bombardment.

All i see is smoke and fire, haha.

Is it possible to just mod a flier tag for them and have it work properly?
