[SG] You Own a fantasy tavern!
« on: July 06, 2015, 12:26:09 pm »

Because I feel bored.

Your fatherimmediate ancestor died. He owned a tavern, so you are now running the tavern like him.
You also happen to have a sisterclose relative, and she's a cook good enough to manage that part for you.
All you need to do, as you two agree, is to work on the other aspect of this tavern.

A Fantasy Job Center.

Heroes will come and go, and some of them may station around the area.
People will come here to find jobs, and others will come to get jobs done.
Soon, you dreamt, this place will be the holy grail for every adventurer in the world.
You, as the tavern owner, are looking to get rich from this.

Before you start, you need to remember a few things. What is your...

Name?
Race?
(Fantasy races. If you wanted a non-standard race please describe. This also limits what personnel are initially available to you.)
Gender if applicable?
Tavern name?

Spoiler:  Level-O-Matic(TM) (click to show/hide)
Level-O-MaticTM is a machine which is supposed to give a combined reading of class and level of anyone it touches (if activated). However, this is known to be very invasive - don't ask how - to the person to be measured, even for skeletons, so you can't use it discreetly. Its also very loud, and emits all kinds of light and sound, so there is no way to conceal your power level if you agree to be measured. [/spoiler]

Name: Trelicia
Race: Draenei
Gender: Female
Tavern name: The Tentacled Lady

We're a draenei that listened when the collision alarm aboard the Exodar announced that we should all get into escape pods. It turned out that the ship was actually fine, but we'd already ejected with the ship in transit and they couldn't find us. After a few days, the escape pod deposited us on this primitive world. Presumably the Exodar continued on to its destination without us, but we'll probably never know and probably never see another draenei ever again.

Fortunately the natives like beer. They do get a bit weirded out by the tentacles though. And that whole 'demon' thing. Silly primitives.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.

Name: Jillek Strump
Race: Halfling
Gender: Male
Tavern Name: The Traveler's Homestead

So~, you might think a Halfling running a tavern, would make it a earth-hole in the ground, but, let me tell you, this tavern here, is far more. We got good, normal beds for us little folks, larger beds for the slightly bigger folks, and lastly, even bigger beds for the even bigger folks. Obviously, the same goes for the seats and the benches, our tankards, the meals a~nd the prices.

Why, yes, you heard that last one right; Take up more space, need more drink, a bigger portion? We got you covered, for the fair dues. As you will come to know, sometimes, being bigger, is a drawback, and this tavern here, my dear guest, is one of such times.

Okay the undead won. I have hoped for a more traditional fantasy race but I can live with this.

A race of "undead" is an oxymoron. After all, what we have is undead Humans, undead halflings, undead orcs and the like. But in this part of the world, more and more undead became sentient to a degree their living parts are.

Before they were pulped like your immediate ancestorwhatever was.

Anyway, they do operate somehow like a race, and their sentience is enough to attract adventurers around the land. First they were trying to beat them back, but realizing that they are not that different, they start to settle among them. The undead have as many, or more problems than the living: Indulgence in magic, menial labour, fetching exotic items or whatnot. They understand that if they leave this place they'll be bonemeal sooner or later. And the living adventurers need food and drink. Ah, the tavern.

-----------------------

Back to the story. You, Ozzy, are the proud owner of Bones, which is not really a surprising name for an undead tavern. Currently, Bones has only a bar table, several tables, and 6 basic guest rooms. Mr. Globoros, which is a patchwork horror, is your cook. While you lack the bodily function to properly taste his food (nor you need to), your guests who can enjoy them are satisfied with it.

In the main hall, there is a large board. This is what everyone refer to as the Job Board. For a price of 5 coppers, anyone can post a message on it. A lot of them will be lost property or cabinets which never sells, but some of them will be actual description of jobs. How well populated this job board is a measure of how much activity this place has. This also provides some jobs and errands for your associates, if they are out of real adventures to do.

The job board has one serious drawback, though. It has no security: one can just remove the message from it if he is discreet enough, and one also need to put down his address or some form of contact person for people to claim rewards. So if you want some baron's head off so he can join the undead ranks, you will soon be wanted to become undead. Not a wise choice.

So this is where YOU step in. Depending on your prestige, money, or a combination of, people will offer to sell you such jobs, for a price. You can keep it to yourself so you can resell this information to your clients, or even organize your clients and associates to finish the job, or to publicize this using the job board if you feel you can get a better cut this way. These jobs, in the long run, should give you the most money.

That said these jobs are never risk free. When you accept to buy the job, you assume the responsibility to have it done, and done well. A botched dragon egg stealing attempt is a good way to draw the ire of the dragon itself. Fail to kill a wealthy merchant, and mercenaries will soon land upon you. So you need to take much more care.

To help you gauge the strength of your clients and associates, you also have the Level-O-MaticTM, which is supposed to give a combined reading of class and level of anyone it touches (if activated). However, this is known to be very invasive - don't ask how - to the person to be measured, even for skeletons, so you can't use it discreetly. Its also very loud, and emits all kinds of light and sound, so there is no way to conceal your power level if you agree to be measured.

Otherwise, this is a world of deception. There were news that how a level 10 pretends to be a level 50 and got a few good jobs before reselling it, and how level 200s monopolizes economies by pretending to be level 20 and sweeps up the cheap jobs with ruthless efficiency.

Enough blurb. Now your first day begins... (in the next post)

Thus a new day begins.

Cracks, a fellow skeleton, come into the tavern as usual, and orders a drink. He cannot drink - it will make a mess on the floor! but he claims that he only feel whole again if his skull comes into contact with some alcohol. His drink is always put onto a wide dish, so the he can get every bit of alcohol he can get. He comes with an old set of leather armor and a warped bronze sword, and he claims to be a Level 10 Fighter.

Doroom, a Patchwork horror, posted a note requesting pest control for his storehouse. You remember that his storehouse is quite large, and have a few stories.

Istolil, a Drow Slave, requested an escort for his mistress, Lady Laele, through the area. She offers 1 silver (=100 coppers), and tips.

Frumwaste, undead goblin mage, came in and asked if there is someone who can replace his ill assistant for a few days. You estimate that he is at least level 100. He offered 100 coppers, 50% down payment, and 50% balance.

Mottles, a walking corpse, requested if there is something suitable for him. You noticed that he comes with a set of bow and arrow.

You also noticed a few "common" faces in the tavern. You counted a some Skeletons, Walking Corpses, Patchwork Horrors, and a few Drows, Goblins, and trolls. There is also a sole human. For some reason, you do not know how to "properly" address anyone other than the basic 4 classes: Warrior, Rogue, Mage and Cleric. Ask if you want to entice them into adventure (or they happen to be adventurers).

So what is your itinerary today Ozzy?

I'm still PTW but who's our sister and who did we inherit the bar from? We're undead.

Oh, you mean Mr. Globoros? Well biologically Mr. Globoros is your father and sister stitched together, so he owns the tavern and she cooks well.

TL; DR: Move on and don't ask why.
