You can tell what plants are, I'm pretty sure, and you can pick them up. You can't really get them back to a fort or anything though, since you'd have to retire the fort, make an adventurer and acquire the items, retire the adventurer at the fort, and then somehow get the items off them (which could involve killing them).

As someone who hasn't played adventure mode, the question of whether you can't just trade your berries to the fortress arises.

In the upcoming version it ought to be possible to pick the berries and then make the adventurer a member of the fortress. Presumably you'd be able to access his inventory the same way as you can that of dorfs after that.

Note that your biome still would have to support the growing of them if you were trying to start local sustained production of e.g. sunshine.

this is what i had in mind, i thought there was a way to mod the raws to make the berries the part that gets picked but idk

No. Berries only come in certain times of year, you have to pick them then as an adventurer. Summer, or spring, IIRC. There's probs some plant modding you could do to make em all year round. See modding thread.
