Beyond thick layers of SMR
« on: June 08, 2015, 09:17:20 am »

My miner drilled all the way down to the SMR layer at z=17.  However, the lowest layer was at -16.

I already checked with dfhack's reveal command and found no candy veins. And the world seemed to end at the SMR layers. Beyond that even dfhack couldn't reveal.

My question is: is there a HFS cavern at all? I didn't check magma layers in advanced world gen, but I did checked the bottom layer(force magma).

What's the size of your embark? You should have at least one candy vein if it's at least 3*3 (1-4, average 2.25, if I recall correctly), while smaller embarks may lack them.
If there is no candy, it doesn't matter if there is any HFS cavern or not, since there isn't any way to get there, unless you're cheating (in theory, teleporting dorfs to the HFS would allow them to get back up, if at least one pickaxe is available to that group, provided, of course, the minor detail of surviving is somehow taken care of).

Someone posted a method (that may be worth refining) to break through semi molten rock on the forums, I never tried though. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=108189.0

I'd forgotten about that thread!
The posts are a bit old, so the method described may or may not work still. It ought to be tested!

I've tried the method for digging upwards, just for the sake of trying it, and that one did work. That's a lot simpler, though.

You did do the correct reveal command?  Just reveal leaves black boxes around the spoiler stuff.  I believe 'reveal hell' reveals everything.  'prospect all' will tell you if you have candy spires and on what levels.  You can also see slade there.

That specific "fun" is only guaranteed if your embark is 2x2 or larger, afaiu. Anything 1x3 or smaller is hit and miss.

Also, you have to have all 3 cavern layers generate, I believe, to make HFS actually occur

Not sure if Albedo refers to HFS itself or the spires that lead to it, but my understanding of the spires is that they are randomly distributed with one spire in each 2*2 embark tile area. If you were to know how these areas align so your embark covers it perfectly, a 2*2 would result in exactly one spire, but if you don't you'll "randomly" cover 1 2*2 perfectly, 2 50/50 (with a 75% chance of getting at least one spire), or get one tile each out of 4 squares, with an 81/256 chance of getting 0 spires, 1/256 of getting 4, and the rest distributed over 1-3 spires.

Ah, you are right. Now I can see the veins...
So candy veins are hidden by default.

Thanks.
