Do X-webs = presence of X-creature?
« on: June 05, 2015, 06:05:39 pm »

Embarked, and saw several "brown recluse spider man webs" in the area. Does that mean that they'll spawn, or have a (stronger?) chance to?

Another reason I ask, is that in the (surprisingly uninformative) wiki article they're labeled as "savage", and this embark is "sinister" (Evil/Benign), which makes me wonder if that tag means what I think it means. :/

Lastly, if/when I do meet something like this, how tough are they, typically?  I'm guessing it's best to deal with them via marksdwarves (or cage traps), just avoid the no-stun/no-pain/webs/syndrome threat w/ anything melee-based?

It means they can spawn, though they'll still be competing with all of the other local creature populations.

Did you check all of your local embark biomes?

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Yep - went back and double-checked the original map. Some "Calm" ocean at the edge of that world-map tile a few embark-tiles away, but my small embark doesn't include that (not by several tiles). In fact, there are no land-tiles in that world-map square that are anything but Benign. :/

I think what happens is that you can get creatures from any biome within 3 region tiles of your embark - I've personally seen stuff like that in the game's memory (local populations, via DFHack), though I don't know the specifics.

So you're suggesting it's kinda like a siege, in that they migrate in from "next door" - hmmm, interesting.

I took a look around the neighboring region tiles, to see what those had to say for themselves - a few "Calm" tiles, but nothing "Savage" of any stripe within 12 Region tiles (way up north, some Untamed Wilds). (It's a Pocket map, 16x16, so region tiles and world tiles are essentially the same.)

I did another embark experimentally in a wider locale, big 4x6 footprint to look around - signs of those webs in about half the neighboring tiles, so it wasn't just a quirk of my little zone.

(Was going to add that DFHack is enabled but it's a vanilla map, no mods - Pocket, lowest savagery, shortest history, highest civs and sites, etc.)

While they do have moderately dangerous venom, they lack the [CAN_DO_INTERACTION:MATERIAL_EMISSION] tag, so they won't spray webs like a GCS. I suspect an armored melee squad should have no difficulty dispatching them.

And you don't have to kill all animal men on sight. Many of them are not hostile (unless you make them so). I don't know if hostility is somehow tied to species, though.
