Nope, nothing to indicate that the mothership isn't around earth anymore. If anything they might have landed it and are using it as their main base of operations on earth, or it might be in orbit still, overseeing their little project. Plus, it wouldn't make sense for such a layered and complex entity to consist only of a mothership, so the aliens we know are prob just a small part of a much bigger entity with a similar or identical goal, with earth being just another experiment.

Maybe that will be the major plot point of nucom 2 :v

Aliums go "naaaaah we failed again lets turn them into slaves and go away searching for more hookers and blow", humanity turns around and  ends up ascending by itself, aliums notice, come back to check on things, and get collectively stabbed by the newfangled humanity.
Exactly!  It'd prove me wrong, but I could totally see that happening.

Too late, the aliens realise humanity had the hookers and blow all along.

The ONLY implication is that there was some sort of global disaster that the aliens saved them from (something that could have happened by the alien ship leaving).

Otherwise it is just conjecture.

But honestly I have no idea why the mothership would stay... Humanity failed, the aliens failed, they need to go out and try to find another possible host species.

They could stay to process humanity, as they're doing in XCOM 2. Rather than splitting their forces, they'll process Earth and then move on, rather than the mothership jetting off on its own.

But then why play nice?

Who says there's only one mothership?

Yeah I mean...  Even if they did set up a test and it failed, they're reaping crazy returns on investment in XCOM 2.  Human DNA has greatly enhanced their sectoids, probably their snakepeople and mutons too.  Plus they have a new army of humans with their own special abilities (totally not EXALT though, nope nope nope) (still hoping for EXALT to be a player in XCOM 2, but I bet most of their recruits sold out humanity by becoming not-Combine).

So they don't have to waste test subjects, and because people are cooperating.  Things may change once XCOM starts doing damage in XCOM2.

Well, its probably easier and less resource consuming to trick humanity into willingly integrating itself into the alien's structure than having to forcefuly eslave every human being alive.

I mean, put yourself in nucom humanity's shoes. Imagine that an incredibly powerful alien force came to your planet and stomped pretty much every resistance in an extremely short period of time, and then offered a hand in uplifting the whole species. Wouldn't you be tempted? Sure, I would be skeptical, but damn would I be conflicted about it :v

Also gameplay reasons. There would be no setting for the game if the aliens just picked some human samples to study and stomped on everyone else :v

We could play UFO Aftermath if we really wanted the "Aliens showed up and killed most everyone" setting.

Maybe the Uplifted Human has something to do with it. Like he saw a coming invasion.

It really is a good game.  The GOG version wasn't unstable like their initial release, either, looks like it got patched well.
Endgame's a bit weak, but not as much as oldCOM and newCOM.

It also suffers from too much "Upping the ante" as eventually every single enemy has rapid fire AoE.

You mean the Volunteer? The one who diddled off with the greatest loot drop X-Com has ever seen?

I enjoyed UFO Aftermath, but it certainly had it's flaws; every battle could be won with grenades, which could be carried in almost unlimited quantities, and there was a huge leap in difficulty once the aliens all suddenly had rocket launchers. Still, the emergence of the Biomass and it's visible growth over the world map was cool.

Maybe the Uplifted Human has something to do with it. Like he saw a coming invasion.
As XCOM never got to build the Gollop Device, I doubt the Volunteer ever emerged.
