In most of my games, there aren't a lot of people around. Like maybe one or two groups of civvies at most. Bad RNG I guess.

I'm using True Concealment and I don't know if that affects placement....but there's usually at least one path around all the civvies I've seen. Sometimes the placement almost seemed deliberate.

I just go with the fact you're generally operating at night and there's a loose curfew. Also what's up with the snake armor? my team leader looks like a vampire hunting furry.

True Concealment is turn countdown editing, not pod placement.

Oh man, current ironman game is going great but I lost my best ranger to sneks on the first blacksite. Heavily underestimated sneks overall, a pair of them would've wrecked the rest of my team if their AI didn't think spitting poison is better than doing the snekhug. Apparently they like to spit poison as long as they can hit 2 or more targets with it, and since one of those targets was the SPARK, only one soldier got poisoned.

I also have this feeling I'm lagging behind on weapon/armor updates. Still going around using the basic kevlar armor and weapons and I already finished the SPARK mission and the first blacksite.

Aren't there two of them?

Anyway, since LWS Perk Pack gave me seven classes, the obvious step from there is for me to do a mono-class run. Except psi ops, eventually. And Sparks, as of last mission. But otherwise it's all shinobi all the time. Then next time will be all gunner all the time. And so on.

I think I went 3 in-game months before I upgraded away from Kevlar. Longer still before magnetic rifles.

Kinda like XCOM:EU, the game seems a little more fun when you're the scrappy underdog. But I feel like XCOM2 dials things way up faster than XCOM1 so you can't use inferior gear indefinitely.

I realized I was a bit behind the power curve when 2 berserkers and a bunch of archons showed up while I was still using normal firearms and kevlar. One mission later I had a gatekeeper.

Yeaaah, I had fun as the scrappy underdog in XCOM2.
But eventually I got frustrated as every level was costing me half my men, or I was losing, and the AVATAR project was saying "No you cannot be a scrappy underdog forever".
So eh I quit.
Probably replay soon on easy because I suck I guess...  Or on Normal, but with foreknowledge.
I'm probably an outlier in that I thought XCOM1 on normal was plenty hard (until plasma/armor research at which point it was a slog).
I have beat OldCOM1, twice, but that's more a matter of patience and expendable time than difficulty.
TFTD doubled the tedium but was *also* actually damn hard.

Edit:  Also maybe I just didn't give it enough time, but I found the NewCOM2 interface (particularly the geoscape) to be blurry and confusing compared to NewCOM1.  Literally blurry/hard to look at, mechanically confusing.

It's weird. I have had exactly one berzerker my whole game. They were introduced months ago in-game. I do like how there's so many enemies now that you can go awhile before seeing them again. I remember Mutons showed up for a few missions then disappeared entirely, only to now start showing up again after months of absence.

But yeah. I think a week or two after I upgraded from Kevlar I started getting Archons, and figured worse was shortly around the corner so I started playing catch up on weapons and armor. I don't find Gate Keepers too bad with Mission Timers +4. It's enough time to get in position and get a good round of concentrated fire on them. Bluescreen Rounds and EMP grenades make short work of them. I never leave home without them anymore, now that Sectopods are an every mission occurrence. ><

TBH other than Alien Hunters, and excusing modded turn timers, I don't know if the game is especially hard. Except for those Defend missions, jesus. With all the enemies rolled out you get like....2 turns to engage everything attacking the transmitter, and even when engaged half the enemies will look at you, then turn and destroy it rather than fighting.

It's the wound times that were getting me, personally. Having half your squad at at a time going 15 to 30 days injured was just becoming too much. AWS and what not helped but really the increased HP from armor is started tipping the balance back.

I also like the game more w/o the Avatar project. I approve of the Dark Events, but I hate the "you can't have fun anymore" timer. I've got the Avatar Project modded to have like 2.5x more steps to it, so it's basically a non-issue but I may just disable it entirely in a new playthrough.

Yeah to be clear I was actually having a lot of fun running a Imperial Guard-esque grist mill.  Even launching nigh-suicidal missions against the research bases to knock back the clock.

But then the AVATAR bases were all on the other side of the planet, plus there those stupid un-raidable points.  I'd definitely replay on normal with a mod that just removes the un-raidable points, and I'd have to sacrifice people to overextend and terrorize the ADVENT scientists.

So yeah I might actually just extend the AVATAR timer via mod, and resume my doomed game where I only just got tier 2 equipment and was 2 points from AVATAR completion.

That's exactly why I set my doom timer out to the maximum. It's just plain more fun to fight for years and years at really high difficulty without the inevitable loss if you feed too much into the meatgrinder without getting Geoscape results.

I don't think I've actually played a game without extending the avatar timer. Too short in vanilla.

Just got the first batch of mag weapons and Its a pretty significant upgrade, since I'm already facing enemy mek units and sneks. Plated armor is next, though I'll be doing an alien hunter mission soon and I'll prob get the ridic snake armor thing out of it. Still a ways away from a sniper rifle upgrade it seems :C

I hope the skulljack works with the ranger's run and gun.
