Well we lasted at least a year. We survived the terrible Yeti attacks, the slightly more traumatic kiwi corpse and kea corpse invasions, and even the elven caravan. And then two zombie boars showed up.

Oh well.

I finally had to use gm-editor to fix the hell worker stuck in traction. After a whole year, I don't think it's going to heal. Luckily all it took was a bunch of scrolling and enters, nothing complicated.

The dwarven and impish caravans arrived. I did my standard deal - imps get the used clothing and totems, dwarves get the prepared meals.

Another option instead of chaining war animals is putting them in 1x1 pastures. They'll stay in the pasture until they see a hostile (such as a kobold) and then chase it down. The only problem with this is dwarves may chase after the animal to try and bring it back to pasture...even if the war animal is charging into a mob of goblins.

I think I would prefer to chain them inside the tunnels and such, so they can have a change - out in the open the goblins could kill them too easily with arrows (I think).
I think you misunderstood me, I meant put them in 1x1 pastures (the activity zone) where you would otherwise put the chains. The 1x1 pastures keep them in place much in the same way the chains do but allow them the freedom of movement to chase after hostiles if they see them. So if you want to chain them in tunnels, you can do that, or pasture them in tunnels. Pastures don't have to be in an "open" area.

Quick question about migrants. I thought the first 2 waves were hardcoded and you wouldnt get any after that if the civ is dead. Is this no longer true? My world has no dwarven civs left standing and I revived mine. But I have gotten 4 waves so far. Also after a queen was made, dwarves not in my fortress were made general, diplomat, etc. Would that mean there are dwarves still alive somewhere? There are no hillocks or anything held by either dwarven civ.

Nah, the info about only getting 2 hardcoded migrant waves is outdated. Actually it was even outdated in 34.11, I would occasionally embark with a dead civ and I'd keep getting migrants til I hit the cap.

Also, just because there are no dwarven sites doesn't mean your civ doesn't have any members hanging out somewhere. Scouts, mercenaries, wanderers, etc.

It'd be interesting to see if a necromancer or a werebeast can become a noble, though it'd be hard to set up.

I found out the cloud on my partial evil fort is thralling
thankfully the "accused soot giant raven thrall" left the map almost as soon as it was changed.

but still....

it is terrifying.....

@TheFlame52:  :D  Good job!  You know, ThatAussieGuy defeated hell with a checkerboard AND walled off hell.  Did you do it with a wall of steel and beards, traps, cave-ins, or the checkerboard-style stuff?  I mean, obsidian-izing.

@endlessblaze: Accused?  "I accuse YOU, soot, of thralling that giant raven!"   :P

By the way, does anybody know if everybody really is historical?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From My Fortress of Teachcities, where Nobody Dies if I can Help It

Domas, the captain of the guard, becomes the mayor.  And I'd already made rooms and everything for her!  Oh, well, I'll just let another person into her (frankly not the best) rooms.  Perhaps I should appoint another guard?

The engravers finally get around to engraving Domas's old bedroom, and engrave many images of the appointing of important leaders in our history.  I know, I'll let the expedition leader sleep there!  Who was he again...  Oh, yeah, he's the manager!  And the bookkeeper!  Where's his office...  It's just in the dining hall!  Well, that'll change NOW!

Magma operations are go.  Infinite Sand/Clay, FTW!

Kadol, the stoneworker, took a break from engraving to grab Kogan, a farmer, who was dizzy.  He seems annoyed at being out in the sunshine again, but he's relieved to have been "rescued" by Kadol.  Well, we don't want him collapsing into the pond.  Good idea, Kadol.

Kadol?

Why, why, why didn't you just put him inside?  Why did you put him into the hospital.  Ah, well.  Kogan says he feels "restless."  Well, you didn't need to rest!  Go ahead and get back to...

Dropping the willow logs you hung onto through the whole fortress, when you could have just dropped them on the stairs next to the carpenter's shop, on the hospital bed?  Well, he got right back to hauling something else.  He must have just forgotten.

Someone shouted that Cerol, the militia commander, had become a legendary axe lord.  I asked whether he was a legendary axedwarf.  He, apparently, is "only" a great axedwarf.  He is a talented shield user, a skilled armor user, a master in discipline, a legendary fighter, an adept wrestler, and a skilled striker.  He is also a proficient dodger.  I think, with his steel breastplate, his steel battle-axe, his fine bronze shield (good dwarf-made work, with alexandrites and lignite cabochons encrusted on it and encircling it all around), and his steel chain leggings, he should be able to easily take on any melee goblin they send at us.  All at once, though...  We'd better set up a defensive structure.  Since most of our economy rests on the plants outside, we'd better cover a large area with that wall.  I think that we should use clay bricks and glass blocks!

I tell the clothier to start making tunics, shoes, and trousers.  I will enforce this dress code for all.  I do not want to be constantly making socks and vests.I previously told her to make dresses, so those will do, too.

Our brave soldiers march out to attack the...  Wild boars!  Just practice.  Nobody run inside.

Aaand they all roll on the ground, nauseous, and barf.  Hmm.  Better make a tower for them to train in.  I could combine that with the walls...

GAH!  Cerol, get out!  You're drowning!

I saved him, pulling him out of the water just before he suffocated.  Goodness!  I order the river floored over...  Perhaps a raised...

Yes!  Just like I've seen in drawings!

Code: [Select]
z=-1:

Q|\_/-\|Q  This is the river.  Q is a natural wall.  | is the river bank (i.e., a wall.)
Q|\_/-\|Q
Q|\_/-\|Q

z=0:

-rO    Or-
-rO    Or-
-rO    Or-

z=1:

 dOOOOOOd
 dffffffd   O is a wall, f is a floor.
 dOOOOOOd

Basically, it's a raised bridge.  Cool, huh?

I forgot to change baby caps in d_init.txt on this computer.
I had been wondering why some 13 years old dorf suddenly terminated her pregnancy.
Maybe next time I should copy the init folder along with the saves.

I used dfhack's gm-editor. There's a pregnancy_timer under relationships.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Well apparently that's happening. Somehow I am not surprised that it can happen more that it's happening without me building an elf atmospheric vaporizer.

Armok himself is grinding elves above you in his great grinder for you to enjoy!

I think I remember seeing that somewhere, can't remember where.  It was in an evil place, just blood rain, succession fortress, so on...
