I tried to ensure I was within range. I do know it only listed tower and two non-goblin civs as neighbors, but unsure how close. My current mod rather hinders finding a good Fun site, because access to a river/stream is basically mandatory. :V

As for war, dunno. Literally everyone else registers as snatchers or thieves, so...

I am ridiculously lazy, and want to embark where there is a water source and a volcano, and I am within range of at least goblins, and it is a savage biome, and there are a couple of other lower-priority preferences like sand and/or clay, or a high number of brewable plants.

It sometimes takes me several worlds to get all of the things I want out of an embark, but cranking up rivers, volcanoes, and starting civs in custom world gen with a fairly short history ensures that there is a high probability of getting neighbors, water, and a volcano in at least one 3x3 location.  I never fail to get sieges once my fort is eligible for them.  This embark is abnormal for me in giving me sieges at low population, but getting sieges at 80+ is routine for me.

Mierda. I've always made sure I was in ranges of as many interesting neighbors as sites allow, but I still never get anything. Except tower sieges, but thus far I've only seen them hit TWO forts/camps.

So my weaver (with no prior combat experience) was collecting webs and got into a fight with a giant olm and then beat the thing until.... ... apparently they fought for so long some of it's wounds turned to scars... the weaver got to
competent observer, Proficient Fighter, Skilled Striker, Dabbling Kicker and Adequate Dodger.... and neither are dead

Check your exported wealth. I don't remember if that affected sieges or not, but it's worth a shot. No sieges, export more. If you get a goblin diplomat or anything, badly injure him so he leaves the map. If he doesn't leave the map, just kill him.

Or you can anger the humans or the elves or something.

I've already modded that to not affect civilizations. >_>

And I can't piss off the elves or humans, I'm playing as kobolds at the moment. They should already BE pissed off.

We breached the cavern and it was, indeed, the third layer.  A couple of fantastic bits of luck here, in that a candy cane extends up into this layer, and the cavern animals, a pack of crundles, had spawned inside an alcove where they were trapped by the candy and the lake.  The things literally can't move, so not only were they unable to harass the dwarves walling off the cavern, they also prevented other critters from spawning in.

The cavern is secure, and we can deal with the crundles at our leisure.  Importantly, we now have blood thorn at our disposal, which was the whole object of this exercise.  The dwarves have also earned some R&R, so I will finally make a temple and tavern, only 9 years into the fort, heh.  Maybe some bedrooms, too.

Skinrags is currently under attack by a werechameleon. It is also apparently a poet too.
I have no idea whether to escort it to the library or slaughter it on sight.

On a side note, anyone know how to put screenshots in posts? Was going to do that, but didn't exactly now how.

EDIT: Okay, so maybe killing the poet while I still had a military would have been a better idea. At least the population is slightly down anyway. Nobody in this fort knows anything about medical procedure so I've decided to give the responsibility to the fish dissector. Hey, she knows about fish guts, so those have got to be similar to dwarf guts, right?

EDIT: EDIT: Nevermind. Five near-dead dwarves are bleeding out on the floor at the corner of the hospital.

It might be fine, they'll get a full heal when they transform.

Well, I've had to wrestle with job cancellation spam about an inaccessible item to haul. This occured after I opened up the other two cavern layers, so far my best guess is one of several crundle skeletons in the third layer. This led to more troglodyte fuckery because I sent my newly-minted second bowkobold squad to scout the area out and try to find this anomalous crundle, since it wasn't on my stocks screen to forbid initially.

Spring has arrived!  And with it, some deaths from old age.  No dwarves of course, but a couple of those crundles stuck in the candy passed on, giving me one loose crundle and several of these:

Enough with the motherfucking troglodytes. One of them back in the first cavern layer is mauling a recruit it caught alone, sending reinforcements after it.

EDIT: Correction, he's getting tag-teamed by two trogs. D:

EDIT 2: Another half-dozen trogs dead, in exchange for two dead and one wounded.

EDIT 3: On the plus side, we've secured raw adamantine just jutting out of the third cavern layer. We may not have metalsmithing, but that does mean the previously-useless spearkobolds can get a bit deadlier. Screw cobaltite spears, we got knapped candy.

EDIT 4: HOLY SHIT. For the first time, I have a kobold visting my tavern.

Today Machineworks, nearing its fourth year, saw its first gobbo siege. (finally!)
About 40 gobbos, with packs of trolls and beak dogs for company...

At the gates they were met by my 25-human-strong foreign legions, while about half of them were still stuck on the other side of the magma moats.
Total casualties: 2 mercenaries, ~18 gobbos, 6 trolls and 9 beak dogs :)

And a human poet walking calmly through the middle of this to get a drink at one of my legendary and overcrowded taverns. Bastard didn't even get scratched.
