The Epic of __________
« on: May 21, 2015, 02:54:11 pm »

Sing, O Muse, of the writing pen, speak true, O Choice, and tell,
Tales of that One who spake, in that tavern born, Page he,
Oh marvel! Great deeds and still greater exploits, sentinel he,
Servant of kings! Death transcendent! Sing of his quest and his duty!
Taken on, sing of his name, claimed by masses' choice in debate, tell
Oh hero, tell of gore-stained battle, love won and of foes slain
Speak of gilt fortunes, gifts razed from godly thrones, solemn incandest,
Oh sage, speak of your name! Doom favored of broken Nereus claimed!

The Epic of Locke.

I have no idea what we're doing (is this a suggestion adventure?), but PTW. This looks promising.

For future reference, you might want to actually try stating the rules in the OP instead of assuming everyone is both well-versed in Greek poetic meter and can somehow read your mind.

THIS IS MY ADMINISTRATIVE EDITOR VOICE. YOU PEOPLE JACKED IT FROM ME BECAUSE YOU'RE ALL TOO LAZY TO WRITE YOUR RESPONSES INTO THE EPIC POEM, LIKE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO.

For we though quite unversed, love regal verses so writ-well!

(This could be REALLY hard to follow the beat schame, esp. for me w/ exams coming up.)

I fear, my dear reader, that to me names are not given,
For this task I give to those who watch. Sing, sing O senate, reveal!

Is iambic hexameter good enough? Dactylic hexameter does sound really awkward to write in.

But let's try anyway. Ahem.

Dwayne the Man, tall is he! Size of a tree, the Man sings prettily, with
Hands like meat hooks spelling sorrow, ringing as they clang upon the skulls
Heathens would hold dear, old ways all burning as he strides forth.

Good gods, that is awful! Can't get the lingo right, and I am perpetually sorely tempted to start doing Dr. Seuss rhymes. Even though it doesn't have to rhyme.

And also I might be wrong about what a long syllable is. Hm.

IT'S A CONVENTION OF EPIC POETRY. IT'S A BIT ODD, SINCE ENGLISH DOESN'T HAVE CONVENIENT CASE ENDINGS, BUT IT WORKS WELL ENOUGH.
