As they'd be rather pissed if the masquerade was part of the reason they died, so they'd try to expose it.

Except that ghosts, unless they have a specific ability to manifest (which means they're probably completely nuts), are invisible, intangible, and inaudible to normals.

I'm guessing the school has some sort of spell on it that causes her to be detectible.

Also, being a ghost requires that you have something very strong keeping you psychologically linked to the world, enough to leave an imprint of yourself behind when you die. So not everyone does it anyway.

Eh, i interpret ghosts as a Primal manifestation (works well with those notes I posted).
So if they possess a lot of Primal power, or is in a place of Primal power, then they become ghosts.
Emotion is a Primal power, so if they're super emo, famous (love or hate), or just bundle up others' emotions, they become ghosts upon death.
It also makes it possible to have ghost wells, where all who die become ghosts, and maybe attracts ghosts as well.
