Exalted Peasant? Huh?
« on: May 09, 2015, 07:29:20 pm »

So I saw this grey asterisk go into a lair, and I followed it.  It disappeared, but I found a peasant.  I tried to talk to him, but he just spat at me.  Naturally, I hacked him to bits.  Here's my following conversation with Iwo Xakingethac, my ally and crossbowman.

Me: "Greetings, Iwo.  Long live the cause!"

Iwo: "Hello.  It is good to see you.  Let's not hurt anybody."

I, unfortunately, lost the rest to yet another crash, but I said something about my recent kill that made it sound like he was, probably, some religious or (not likely) political leader.

My question is, who was he?  Is he a werebeast?  I know I met him around Slate 14th.  Is he some sort of other beast?  But then, unless he was a vampire, he would not look like a normal peasant.  But werebeasts live in the outskirts of towns, don't they?

I'm so confused!

If you didn't load or start a new game, I think the rest might still be available in some log.

I love this community. Somebody asks "hay guise how do i tame shark", and then everybody is like "why don't we fling sharks at things with complex mechanical devices?".

As far as I know peasants in caves are always werebeasts, they just aren't currently transformed. What made him sound like an important figure?

Maybe a ruler of some kind was infected? It did use the past tense.

Heiterverzweiflung. Not a legit German word so much as something a friend and I made up in German class once. "Carefree despair". When life is so fucked that you can't stop laughing.

A religious leader was infected is my best guess.  That's definitely a religious leader's title.

The part about being the high exalted probably means that he was a high priest or something when he was transformed. Or maybe that was part of his randomly assigned title. The part about being revered is just something that people in the game add when talking about their kills to make them sound more impressive.

Was he naked ?
Unless it's been changed, werebeast found in their human format in the wilderness are usually naked in their sites.

About the revered part, when a monster has killed many (or made several rampage) in worldgen, Dwarf Fortress npc usually develop a Stockholm syndrome and the murdering monster become the object of their worship.
Possible that the werebeast had rampaged enough during worldgen to trigger that strange behaviour and became the deity of several crazy npc that indeed do not know better (as the monster will still kill its worshippers without any remorse).
