The Little Ideas:Post your small suggestion here!
« on: May 06, 2015, 02:46:21 pm »

Based on a Baystation thread:http://baystation12.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=653

This is a place where we can share very minor ideas that doesn't need their own unique topics.

Mostly stuff like new items, creatures and stuff that can take only a minor update to be added.

So feel free to post your tiny ideas below and maybe some day it could be added without too much effort.

If you think your idea is too big then create a separated thread.

I was thinking about starting one of these myself.

It bugs me that bigcats are trainable, while canines cannot be.  Wolves and dingos are biologically dogs, they should be able to do whatever dogs can do, or at least be better at those things than leopards.

And hippos should be more dangerous.  The are the #1 killer of human beings, they should be the #1 killer of dwarves too.

And muskoxes should be shearable.  That's totally a thing.

Here's the thing: Threads that include random lists of random suggestions tend to be terribly hard to search, and therefore, a really bad idea.

Seriously, go back and read through this forum for a while, and you'll find a veritable flood of "my list of suggestions!" from first-time posters that ignore what's already planned or what has already been suggested or debated.  Most readers, most likely Toady included, have learned to just ignore these types of threads by habit, since there's no way of figuring out how to separate the wheat from the chaff.

The forum doesn't have a finite quantity of threads it can contain.  A small thread is fine.

But there's a problem with an idea that can't be debated.  By making this a giant jumble of ideas, you restrict the capacity of an idea to be debated, and turn it into a half-formed idea shouting contest.

Theses are all pretty easy modding tasks. Give the hippo more attacks and muscle power, make it like fighting. Adding a trainable tag to wolves. (I did it to cats, the result was hilarious.) and adding a tag or two to ox.

Simply because this thread has been chastised and the "Tweaks thread" has not, I'm going to post this here.

The designation menu should add a new option, "Dismantle". While the existing "Remove construction" command would still cause the newly-freed building materials to fall straight down & land in the collection area (or in a volcano, or on a hauler's head), workers Dismantling a construction would pull the building materials onto the tile that they're already standing on, where it generates a Hauling job. So, depending on the location of the eventual stockpile, players would be able to choose the starting point that makes for a shorter hauling trip. Not to mention being able to re-use materials used for temporary constructions over magma or water.

[LIKES_FIGHTING] was removed in 0.40.14 and never actually influenced creature behavior, just the "joy in the slaughter" thought.

Why can't two creatures stand up when occupying the same tile? It makes no sense and it's so annoying in adventure mode.

A similar thing applies to wood/stone/bin-less stockpiles. One item-per-square seems counter intuitive when more than one wood log can exist on one square when a tree gets cut down.

Conflict event rumors in adventure mode need more than two vague key-words.

It would be nice if you could designate certain workshops for "personal use", as in the dwarves can use them to craft whatever dumb thing they want without the player's interference.

Please let us bundle similar bolts/arrows together into larger stacks. Also, re-filling waterskins/flasks/anything else should do the same thing and the existing water in the flask into one entity.

A lot of the UI needs to be reworked to properly resize itself with higher window resolutions.

All I can think of for now.

Are you referring to screens in adventure mode? Nearly all screens in fortress mode that I can think of handle larger window sizes at this point.

A few don't.  Inventory for example.

What really needs doing though is to slow down and start fixing bugs.  There's some armor bugs as old as 40d11 for example (can't use shell helms)

Not sure how "small" this is but how about putting an [infertitle] tag so that mules aren't male only anymore, I know it wouldn't make a mechanical difference but having every mule in the universe be male just seems... strange.

Fine -- fixing older bugs.  If newer ones always take priority, the old ones will stay broken forever.

WHAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUAAAAAAAA

Toady One is awesome, and fixes tons of bugs.  I just noticed that!  Toady!  Bugs!...

I'll just be over in this corner here.

But seriously, everybody who complains about their pet bug not being exterminated yet, peek at the bug tracker.  He's in the middle of a veritable swarm of bugs, and can only eat them so quickly.
