Never tried out multiplayer in KSP before. Not done much with mods, for that matter. What do I need to grab to join you guys and where is it?

you'd need a pristine ksp version, without any mod. drop that mod and you'll have a multiplayer menu right from the starting screen of ksp

enter the ip on the OP, and you're ready to fly

It works, hooray. Time to send a rocket into orbit as a warmup.

Personally I used CKAN to install the multiplayer client. It's nice.

I forgot batteries to the light tower I brought to mun city, so I sent a battery pack up there

this is close, but not close enough. I landed with mechjeb this time, one hairpin landing is enough :P

I used just enough thrust to balance gravity, then controlled the section with just rcs

I got sooo close, then chickened out and closed the solar panels. I landed with the docking port touching, but they didn't actually docked until I lowered/raised one leg, allowing enough freedom of movement for them to engage

are you sure you're running an unmodded version? it might also count not having crafts with modded part in the save folder nor in the default craft folder. please check.

On the first launch into the server I had some mods on.  Instant I noticed I left and removed them from the folder.  Might have wound up with something left over inside the server from that one time.

DMP for starters, antenna range has the update ready and will upload in los angeles evening and I don't know about snacks.

trajectories, mechjeb and engineer with their client only no part incarnation could be used at user will so we can start without them and won't change a thing on the server, as long as people delete the parts folder of them

Instead of snacks you may want to look at usi life support. No kerbal deaths but unsupplied kerbals refuse to work until supplied.

oh that's an interesting spin, I like how it sound more than snacks.

maybe since this is gonna be 'community', it might be more appropriate to have the full kolonization system? along with resources, will give something to do to everyone, and it is optional (i.e. just ignore additional part), as opposed to antenna range, which would be a limit to everyone.
