Forgot to go to work...
« on: April 20, 2015, 12:49:38 pm »

Its a part time job, I work different days every week, and for some reason I was really sure that I had no work scheduled for today. Only now, in the evening have I realized I missed an entire day.

What the hell am I going to do :O

This is further complicated by the fact that I am currently being considered for a better, more interesting job within the company.

Is the situation beyond saving?

As long as you're honest about it, no. Part-time workers are at the whim of shift scheduling, and you can easily be confused when your next shift was, especially if mid-week changes were made.

That said, it depends on the business and your bosses. I once had a part-time job where the bosses wanted to fire me, so they changed my hours mid-week, didn't notify me, then fired me for no-call no-show. (No one bothered to get a hold of me the day I was "supposed" to work either.)

Still, if you're being considered for another, better position, you're probably not just a grunt they'll hire and fire quickly. Just go to your boss, apologize profusely, promise it won't happen again, and then make sure it doesn't.

People make mistakes. Some people understand that. Some people don't. You're a person. Your boss is a person.

Just say it was an honest mistake and try to be more careful in the future.

Next, what everyone else said ._.

Probably directly communicate with the people in charge, and be straight up with the explanation (as in, sure, there could be excuses along the way, but being honest and direct tends to bring credibility.) Apologize, and detail what happened, and you've done your part. :D

What kind of people are your colleagues? I would have like five calls if I missed my work by one hour. And I don't mean it in bad way, they would try to get in touch with me to ask if something happened to me (like a car crash or something).

I also find it very strange that nobody would try to contact you after not showing up. Do you work under a manager? In that case it really should have been his responsibility to follow up why you're not at work. However I think its best to go in and explained exactly what happened, also offer to make up the lost time some way (maybe work an hour extra for a couple of days if possible).

Apparently there is not much work to do this week, so it wasn't such a big deal.

Whew, glad it turned out OK.

And I gotta say it reminded me of this Steve Martin bit:

If it was your first time, not really. Don't openly admit it, if asked say you got the flu but didn't go to the doctor. It might slow down your progress within the company, but won't really terminate you.
