Kea men have crippled my fort
« on: April 16, 2015, 06:49:17 pm »

they constantly dive bomb my fort scaring all of my dwarves so I cant build my walls or really do anything productive and I have no cross bows to kill them and a dwarf died after punching a capybara and then fell down the stairs of my fort? rotted and poured miasma out.

[Edit] so I managed to get rid of them and by that I went into the raws and removed the kea's nerves and wings then loaded it up and they were gone

Welcome to DF.

Do you have any underground buildings made of wood? use [t] to find what a building is made of. Disassemble several wooden buildings to get wood. Now build a bowyers workshop from these wooden logs. Assign a dwarf who's underground to bowyer, and tell him to make a wooden crossbow. Now check your dwarves for 'marksdwarf' skill. If any of them have it, put him in a [m]illitary squad with the 'markswarf' setup, NOT light or metal armor. Let the dwarf grab the crossbow. Then disassemble the carpentry shop for it's logs and rebuild as a craftsdwarf's shop. Use this to produce wooden bolts with a log.

now assign the {s]quad that the marksdwarf is in to [k]ill the keamen. You can select the precise ones you want him to shoot from a [l]ist

this should let you shoot down the kea menace with 7 logs underground.

Recruit a melee squad and station them near the entrance, do not give them uniforms if they get interrupted.
If you are luck they should be able to fight them when they try to enter your fort...

Again, welcome to DF.  Kea have a thing for stealing.  You can leave traps for them outside (items as bait with cage traps), or just seal off your fort until you are ready for them.

It sounds like you are futzing about aboveground too much too soon.  Make a single entrance to your fort and build a bridge to seal it off at will, then trap a part of it.

Dig far deep underground. If the kea men attack you in the land of the mole dwarf, the kea men are soon to find themselves crying in cage traps or far worse mechanisms.

That is 10/10 a dorfy solution. You will do well here.

If you can involve grizzly bears or crocodiles, I'll take off my hat.

Yeah, they fall down the stairs like that because they lose conciousness.  Staircases are treated like empty space by KO'd things.  I usually split my stair at z-1, just by 10 tiles or so, which lets you put in a guardroom and makes passing out while fleeing from hostiles into the fort less lethal.

This is one of the factors speaking against single central master stair designs for forts.  I once had a syndrome hit, something minor with dizziness and fits of unconsciousness, something like 90 dwarves fell to their deaths.

Well this looks easily weaponisable...

Also, if you ever figure out why poets/bards/dancers just randomly start butchering people/getting butchered, please don't fix it, I love never knowing when a dance party will turn into a slaughter.

Indeed..... If you could build a staircase and coat it with this substance, then dwarfs wearing gloves and boots and the like should be safe, but animals........

I've got a sleeping/fever poison-spitting FB in my beast stockpile. I should make it into a turret.
