I remember some good homebrew stuff on the DS, and the 3DS doesn't disappoint in that regard.

3DS you will get the most utility (gaming on the go), Wii U you will get the most 'neat exclusives'.

What I'm doing:  Wii U when Xenoblade 2 comes out (or on price drop.  Right now looking at $200 refurbished).  When PS5 comes out I'll consider PS4 for rpgs and shit.

I would definitely advise against getting a PS4. Terrible, terrible design choices abound.
Sure, it has more processor power than the PS3, but it has a lot of flaws. This sounds like a shocking thing to say, but I would even recommend an X-Bone over a PS4, and X-Bones are pretty bad. There aren't any good new-gen consoles. It makes me sad.

And don't get me started on the "wii U".
How the fuck did they have the perfect opportunity and still not name it the 'Puu'? I still haven't forgiven Nintendo for that.

3DS has generally better games, period, at least in my opinion.

Vita is like next to it, but I only have like what, five games? (MGS Snake Eater, Disgaea 4, Disgaea 3, P4G, etc.)
There's Freedom Wars if you're interested in a good online game, but 3DS has MH4U, so...

The consoles suck. I'm sticking to my PC till they release something that doesn't double (by which I mean specialize more on this aspect than, what else, GAMING.) as a DVD and a privacy breach.

IMO, Wii U has some awkward designs but its game lineup looks nice.

XBox One and PS4 just plain suck. Needs a killer app for me to be convinced of buying it (Persona 5, etc.)

2DS if tight budget, but if you can afford it, I'd recommend the XL ver. of the 3DS. Battery and stuff.

The New 3DS XL. It plays the full line of games. Some games won't play on anything else.

At this point, realistically, 3DS if you are looking for both mobility and range of options.  It is the safe bet.

Fun little tidbit: The PS4 can probably fit in a laptop bag, at least it did in mine.  It looks like it would fit in the 15.6" or whatever normal size bags.  Well, it is of course roughly twice as fat, but laptop bags I seen usually do have that extra spacing for other stuff.

There's no regular size New Nintendo 3DS in the United States, for whatever reason Nintendo doesn't want to sell them here. If you're in Europe you could get the regular size one if you wanted a smaller form factor.

If I was shopping for a 3DS now I'd get a New 3DS (XL or not). It has extra shoulder buttons, you don't need to be so careful to hold it correctly for the 3D effect as it now adjusts for your position, and it has the right hand nub-joystick for camera control and similar.

Yeah, if you have the cash and don't mind console obesity New XL is the way to go. If you're looking for something cheaper and don't mind the idea that your system looks like the bastard offspring of a DS and a Game Boy, 2DS won't disappoint.

And with a New 3DS you also need to factor in buying a charger, since those don't come with.
