That's what I've heard as well, but is it true in any sense of the word?

I don't have any full on statistics, but as someone who lives here it definitely seems that way.
I mean, for one thing Ramen is well known as a "poor student food" here.
And if you want full on health food you WILL pay out the nose.

But like, how much is some celery or carrots or something?  Not pre-packaged health food, but just food.

Where I live, a tiny chocolate bar is like 5 dollars, and I can buy most of the vegis for a weeks worth of chili for that price.  (roughly, I don't know exactly)

Everyone become vegetarians, or at the very least reduce your meat consumption heavily. Vegan would probably be even better, but from experience I can say the latter requires quite some effort, while the former is relatively easy.

Well like I said, don't have solid stats for you (BFEL mostly just tags along for grocery shopping), and don't quote me on this, but I think a...stalk? of celery or such is about the same price as a 6-pack of ramen (using ramen because its pretty much the cheapest of the cheap here)

I mean "real" food isn't UBER expensive, but grabbing ramen or canned soup or such is extra cheap.

Yeah, some of the main factors on price of food goods in the US is travel expenses and holding expenses, which is why things like canned soup and ramen are so cheap compared to actual vegetables. Things like ramen are packaged at the factory, require only gas costs to move to store, and then are just handled in big pallets and placed on shelves without any special handling. On the other hand fresh vegetables are grown, harvested, then they need to be refrigerated while waiting to be transported, then transported on more rare refrigerated trucks/trains, generally for at least a couple days, and then finally refrigerated in the store. Those extra costs add up very quickly.

In addition a lot has to do with the distance things get moved, if you buy stuff in a farmers market in the US it's generally a lot cheaper than buying it in supermarkets, just because of the distance most of the supermarket stuff needs to get moved before it gets to the store. To put it in terms of European scale, it would be a lot like if France didn't grow most of its own food, but instead imported the majority of it from Poland. Farther distances mean more costs, which mean higher prices.

Hmm.  I've mentioned vertical farms in this forum before, and one of the big downsides is that its just more expensive than farming in a field.  What if we did insect-farming IN a vertical farm environment?  It sounds like farming bugs is relatively easy to do, you just need some grains to feed them.  I bet you could get a LOT of food out of a 10 story tall bug farm(Maybe the top floor growing grain/oats for the bugs to eat).

I think that it would be great for countries without the social stigma there but I think it might not work that well in the US, what with our whole "bugs are gross and disgusting" thing we've managed to ingrain into our minds pretty firmly. :P

People have different views on different bugs though. I can see crickets being relatively fine compared to, say, spiders. Even less well received would be something like snails.

Sadly, bugs don't give as much sustenance as the grains you feed them would give, and as we all agree, bugs aren't appreciable.

I'm pretty sure snails are the most well-received edible bug in Western culture.
Would rather have escargot then cricket.
Is weird, but true.
Silly socially ingrained bughate :P

Only because of precedent though. If you were to replace snails with slugs people would be way off it.
