I don't think I have the chops to invent fusion. Seriously, does anyone have any recommendations for what we as individuals or as a goup could try and do?

The best would be avoiding using cars, but yeah, hard to do that depending on were you live.
Just having the number of cars on streets cut down to half would already have pretty visible changes to climate and urban areas.
After that, you can only try to make money and evolve the world. Try to fund projects, make use of prototypes of new stuff and such, jsut this can help lots with most research projects.

Reduction in car use is good.  The classic "3 Rs" (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) are still a good way to look at your waste, especially in plastics and non-biodegradable materials.  Look at ways to reduce your energy consumption - use the AC or heating a bit less, turn off lights, and so forth, and you can also save money in the process.  Eat less meat and more vegetables, especially if it's local food.  For an example given earlier in the thread, TempAcc is 100% right about how inefficient cattle farming is as far as land use is concerned, but what he didn't mention is that the livestock industry is also a huge source of methane, a major greenhouse gas.  That's just me spitballing, though; I'd imagine other people will have more ideas as well.

Political activism. Like, a lot of it.
To be effective enough, probably going over into territory that's a little bit less than legal though.

Reducing your energy consumption in general is a great individual way to help. Look into solar panels, store washing machine and bath water to wash your floors and bathrooms when you need to, recycle and reuse everything reasonably possible, stop using cars if possible, consume less confort food that takes unproportional ammount of energy and/or water to produce (IE soda, beer, tv dinners, dehydrated instant food like cup noodles, etc). We already do some of these at home for several years now.

This isn't a problem for me personally (yet) but there are plenty who survive on that stuff because it doesn't mean they choose between food or shelter that month.

I'm kinda curious about that...
Were you actually saying that junk food is verifiably cheaper than real food in America, or were you just cracking a joke? I don't doubt that homeless people without access to a kitchen will have to rely on instant meals, but that is another problem entirely.

I've heard that real food is expensive there.  I don't understand why.
