[ISG] The Elder Scrolls: Windhelm
« on: March 21, 2015, 12:50:42 pm »

A dunmer, eking out a pitiful existence amongst the hopeless ruins of Morrowind, moves to Windhelm after hearing stories of wealth and success from his cousin. However, once he arrives, he finds that the comfort of the Grey Quarter has been somewhat exaggerated. Nevertheless, he tries to make the best of this new start and together with his cousin try to rebuild their family. However, the Camona Tong, long-since reduced to a handful of smugglers operating between Raven Rock and the other Northern ports, has been slowly rebuilding for the past few decades, and for a freshly arrived dunmer in a cold town that doesn't look too kindly upon greyskins, they seem to be the best opportunity around.

The ship creaks and groans as the waters heave underneath it. You pull your cloak tighter around yourself; you had expected it to be cold, but not this cold. Snowflakes swirl about you, accumulating on your shoulders as you stand motionless at the prow of The Dainty Sload, waiting for your destination to come into view. According to the sailors, Windhelm was less than a day away. Your thoughts drift back to Vvardenfell, your family's home. You came from...

1. Balmora, the seat of House Hlaalu.
Before Red Mountain's eruption, you were an agent of the merchant house, skilled in diplomacy, trading, stealth, assassination, and hand-to-hand combat. Your family was once wealthy and prestigious, but now they're little more than paupers.
2. Ald'ruhn, the seat of House Redoran.
You fought alongside the other warriors of Redoran to defend your home with sword and spear during the Oblivion Crisis, but the city was overrun. You struggled to rebuild the city alongside the other Dunmer, only to have Red Mountain destroy the rest of your past. There's nothing there for you now.
3. Sadrith Mora, the seat of House Telvanni.
Within the Telvanni's fungal towers, you studied and researched magic as a retainer of House Telvanni. You wielded elemental powers, summoned daedra to do your bidding, and understood the lost art of mysticism. In the chaos of the Argonian invasion, you fled north to Redoran lands and, eventually, to Skyrim.

What is your name?

Your name is Merdok Arvel of House Hlaalu.

Your family owned a plantation back on Vvardenfell before everything went to hell, but now your lands are overrun by lizards and most of your family members are dead. One of the few remaining Arvels is your cousin, Thauraver, who sent you a letter urging you to join him in Skyrim to help rebuild their family's fortune by capitalizing on the civil war. Buying and selling weapons, armor, essential foods, fabrics - anything an army would need in bulk.

While you had some reservations, primarily revolving around your complete lack of capital with which to make an initial investment, you had nowhere else to go.

As an Agent of House Hlaalu, your skills include Speechcraft, Mercantile, Sneak, Acrobatics, Short Blade, Block, Unarmored, Hand to Hand, and Illusion.

Your thoughts are drawn back to the present as the city's walls break through the fog. Dockhands and sailors shout back and forth at each other and the ship is carefully brought in next to the pier. You watch as lines are cast across and a gangplank is lowered. The captain steps onto land to argue with the customs official. Nobody pays attention as you quietly cross past them and head into the city proper.

Your first impression of the city is that it's... bleak. The buildings are grey, the sky is grey, the air is cold, and the guards are already keeping far to close an eye on you already. The narrow, crooked streets are nearly empty. The few Dunmer and Argonians that venture through the city move hurriedly. You haven't seen any Nords besides the guards yet, a fact that you're rather appreciative of.

You take a moment to reflect on how helpful it would have been if Thaur had included directions to find him in his letter.

If you're going to be a merchant, you should find out what the Civil War's wrested from the city. Ask a guard about the shortages around here. Demand drives price up, after all.

Getting off the boat and having our first action be asking some guard about shortages rather than find an inn or our cousin seems a bit...unrealistic. Maybe we should ask among the Dunmer for Thauraver?
