Pretty much what tyrar said. We have, as of now, no experience casting any firespells. That bird was shot with our arrow.

Also, if selling magic books was any way to get stinking rich, guess what all those loafer apprentinces would do all day? These guys ought to be pretty common, seeing as the keeper who welcomed us, left a few strong-worded comments about them, yes, even suspected us as one of them right of the bat. So, either there is a market for copying books, which will be overflooded with any basic theory and cantrips within our reach, or there is not for a reason. If the former, there is little money to be made, if the later, we don't want to find out why.

Sell what books? Were a novice and anything we know someone else can learn through a little reading. We've already established that the servants here know just as much as us only now we know a little about fire. Lets just do some herbalist stuff to make money.

Also +1 to a leather breastplate since we could really use one when a feild assignment turns up. Also a servant for alchemy/herbalism would be good  to help us make our potions.

I vote getting the leather armor
Getting a warrior servant or guard so he can help us train
Not selling books on magic
And as I already said, Saufelta.

Ok, so I was wrong about the arrow thing but I'm still not convinced about the book thing. First of all, let's assume that we're allowed to and that selling books will make us decent profit. Ok, so why does everyone think we have to choose between herbalism and book-making to make money? Could we not set up or hire a printing press on the side to make books while we do our normal herbalism stuff? Even if not, why don't we just do it now? I get that doing herbalism would be a preferred way of making money but the fact of the matter is that we're just not doing that at the moment. We can't profit from herbalism until we start getting sent on field assignments but what we can do is profit from selling magic.
Again, this is assuming we'd make decent profit if we sold magic.

Sell what books? Were a novice and anything we know someone else can learn through a little reading. We've already established that the servants here know just as much as us only now we know a little about fire.
The idea was we copy the words from the cantrip book Aednat gave us into another book and sell that other book. Since we were offered 24 silver for our book by the bard I have a feeling they'll sell for a decent price, if not here then in other towns.

All fanfics are heresy, each and every one, especially the shipping ones. Those are by far the worst.

We're 'fit'. If we do a lot of exercise, would we become more than 'fit'? Would it mean we could traverse the countryside more quickly than we used to?

If you were travelling alone or were for some reason the slowest member of your group. But even so things like weather/skill in relevant field (such as woodsmanship) will probably have more bearing on your travel speed. Fitness is more useful for successfully accomplishing feats of athleticism or avoiding weariness. I suppose that would make it useful for travelling without becoming weary if you were ever to really push yourself, which would make you faster in a roundabout long-term way.

Jehundik Vanyik
First Circle Apprentice of the Bronze Tower
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Other Assets
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You officially request apprenticeship with Suafelta Greytower, and ask for a combat-trained servant to serve as a bodyguard. Adabelle's scribe records your wishes, and before she leaves she explains to you that while under the purview of the tower your servant will be required to earn their keep, similarly to how you are expected to do so. The servant chosen for you will also likely be a member of the local militia, and therefore will have to fulfill their obligation to train and drill with the other local militia members. All told the servant will not have a great deal of time to focus on serving you, though you are free to give the servant any broad directives you wish. If you ever leave the tower for an extended period however, you will be free to bring your servant with you, and while so doing monopolize their time.

It will apparently be a little longer until the matter is properly decided upon, so you return to your routine.

You purchase both the robe and the leather breastplate, for the previously agreed upon prices, leaving your wealth cut considerably, not that you were particularly wealthy to begin with.

Your academic studies into magic hit an interesting windfall. You find a book, tucked and hidden away behind a pair of books you suspect are rarely read, that seems to detail and give clear instruction on the basics of animal based bio-magic. It's very misleadingly named, and you suspect not even supposed to be here. On cursory examination the book details how to damage or repair basic tissues, though it suggests that for the latter to be attempted the user should probably understand the basics of the physiology particular to the work being attempted. Various grisly diagrams are included, using rats to provide examples on proper technique. After that cursory read you stow the book away in it's hidden place. You could study it openly, here in the library, or bring it to the library scribes to have it lent out to you, or perhaps you could sneak it out. Or perhaps simply forget that it's there.

Your time spent on practical fire magic meets with limited results. You learn that you are capable of casting the offensive spells you have memorized, but you have not yet mastered their use. Still, you are having a much easier time doing fire magic here than you were on the trip to the tower, as if the place itself feeds your power, or at least makes it easier to access.

Despite middling success with your actual work, your academic research into herbalism continues to go nicely, and your understanding of the various properties of plantlife both mundane and magical might allow you to increase the potency of whatever concoctions you create with them in the future, if your studies hold.

Through flukes of charm and general likability during the time you set aside for socialization you are already becoming quite popular among the other first circle apprentices you spend your time with, some of whom actively begin to court your time and attention. You're even offered a bit of juicy gossip which if true might indicate that Viskesha and Baleckar may be both having an affair and actively working against one another's plans.

...

It takes a week and a half more for whoever makes such decisions to process your requests and see to them. You meet your servant, a twenty one year old man name Alafard who takes a formal oath to serve you, one that you learn is magically binding, though not eternally so. He's of average height and build, with short sandy hair and an ugly large nose. He explains to you that he has training with the shield, the spear, the axe and the club, and that he's earned his way until now working at the Bytower stables. He can continue working at the stables, or if you prefer earn his keep for the tower another way. He's willing and able to undertake whatever tasks you wish of him in his spare time.

You are also officially declared Saufelta's apprentice, and she meets with you to fully explain what she expects of you for the moment. After having observed you she is glad to learn that you seem dedicated to your studies, and therefore will not demand as much time of you as she did of her other apprentices so early in the apprenticeship. She needs you to set aside four hours of every day to work and study with her, during which she will help you learn the basics of either fire or light magic. She plans on teaching you both, but explains it will be much easier if you commit to one now. She is better at teaching light magic, but if you have a preference for fire she is willing to teach you that first, as she is fairly competent in that discipline as well. She currently expects nothing from you but for you to learn, though she explicitly states that will change in the future.

Sharpen Alafard's spear.
Have Alafard do what he will.
Read the book in the library but try to stay inconspicuous.
Read on the anatomy of the human ankle.
Take an hour off socialising and three hours off our usual studying to work with Saufelta.
Tell that of Fire we're only interested in Fan of Flames and Fire Arrow. If she wishes to teach us Light magic afterwards we'll learn but we'd prefer to learn Herbalism and Alchemy.

-1 against any attempts to check the book out
Pre-emptively, I fear they would take it. This is truly a great developement for us, as alchemy and bio-magic should complete each other incredibly well. Should we even commit to said path, we might become a talented healer - a truly viable asset, as I would think. Else, healing smaller wounds is always great, and as we still develop our martial skills, it seems we aren't planning on becoming a complete bookworm. As in, we have reason to believe that we might get use out of such spells.

Learn said book
Doing so in our decreed magical study time - or whats left of it after Suafelta - should take precedence over other matters, safe what homework we might get from our master, if any.

Learn Fire Magic from Suafelta
We already got a headstart there, and for our future outside missions, it is a good insurance to have.

Not sure if we need those two hours of socialization, so cutting one of them off, and taking the other 3 needed hours from our library-study, seems good to me. We can always change the schedule, if it should prove too stressful in the long run.

We could ask Saufelta to check out the book for us and give it to us when we need it. Then when her time is done we'll check it out that very minute by putting in a petition when she takes it. Both of these "lending" terms should be enough to read the whole thing cover to cover.

Tell Alafard to sharpen his own spear. Why should we do it?

Learn fire Magic from Suafela. Show her what we know about fire magic and go from their. This way we can skip the basics.

We should continue with our Herbalism study sessions to learn about concocting potions. Maybe ask Suafelta about how to start so we can make money for ourselves.

I agree with all of the above, but we also need to make sure that Alafard knows that we are equals, and we only wish companionship in our travels. I think that ought to give us a head start in our friendship.

It wasn't my idea, but to me it seems like something we can do in about 10 minutes.

Let's just chat and get to know him. Treating him like an equal right of the bat seems like a bad idea. Have him earn his master's companionship not just give it out. In fact why not go out one night to drink our foreign wine with him?

It'll be nice to finally use that plus we find friends in the town near by.
