Ask to meet this dude's parents. It's an unorthodox but surprisingly simple and effective way to tell us if this guy's secretly a bandit or something. On an unrelated note, it's good to know that Veila can learn magic just by watching us - she'll get to learn magic without affecting our own studies.
+1

We should also attempt to explain some of it to her also. Also, offer to pay Maergor for that leather job he did.

Explaining wouldn't be a great idea, IMO. We tried doing that and apparently all it did was take away our Ample Time for Study bonus. I don't really think we should pay Maergor. While it was certainly nice of him to do that (and do all the sharpening), that's just another job that travelling companions do for one-another, just as we hunt and lead them through forests and stuff. We can certainly pay for the material costs, though.

Considering his clothing, and the fact he seems to have spent several days at this tavern you do not think he is a local. Part of his introduction also included the implication that he is accustomed to travel, but that he has never been far outside Arfelt, the Kingdom you are currently within.

That she can! Many skills give careful observers experience, but only on successful checks, and that's dependant on the skill level of the person being observed. That means that for the moment, Veila has gained experience from watching you do magic, but very little. Your failed attempt to teach her was not a waste of time either, as it gave her the opportunity to roll to learn a cantrip, and gave you a little more experience. She failed, but the attempt still gave her experience, if you had succeeded on your check you would have given her a bonus to her own roll. As is she can only gain experience in magic from observing you successfully perform magic, or by having you teach her, as she lacks the necessary materials or baseline of experience to practice on her own.
These mechanics also mean that your companions have been gaining a little woodcraft experience from your own routine checks, and that the whole party gained bargaining experience from observing the more experienced Kellay bargain on your behalf around town.

Experimentation of magic? Knowledge of magic?

Also, I think we should decline and just go our own. Also avoid the swamp path just take the normal road and see if we can follow a caravan.

Ask our companions about taking the bard with us. This is one of those things we ought to consult our friends about.

+1 as well, while you can't be too careful around strangers an extra hand and a little music can't hurt. If the others agree I say we take him

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Firstly you ask Gimwelf what kind of experience he might have. He admits that his experience is largely academic in nature, but he claims to be an accomplished mediator skilled in calming tense situations, as well as a passable fighter and bowman who can hunt as the need arises. He also demonstrates a cantrip which produces a small candle-sized flame between his fingertips for several seconds before guttering out.

Talking it over with Veila and Maergor you find that Veila is agreeable to having another able travel companion, even if only shortly. She cites the dangers of the road that you've already experienced as reason enough. Maergor is somewhat conflicted on the matter. If he's being truthful his aid could be helpful, and if not you will have saddled yourself with a burdensome mouth to feed, at the very worst he could even be working with some sort of local criminals or witches to bring you into a trap, unlikely as that might be.

Well, basically it's down to do we extend our trust towards him that he's being at least somewhat truthful. I say yes.

Well, we've been picking up news the time we were here and we didn't get a single snippet about local criminals or bandits. He's been here several days so we can ask people if he's been behaving well, as well. If we take him on, we ought to make sure that one of us is with him at all times, at least long enough until we know we can trust him. His skills ought to be amazingly useful on the road if he comes along with us.

Find people to vouch for the bard.

+1 I think we can trust him plus it'd be nice to have a nice song while on the road.

You ask the Innkeep Mashira if she thinks that the bard is trustworthy. She doesn't know for certain, but she corroborates that hes a rather decent musician and singer, and she's even paid him to entertain patrons on the busier days. He's been around for just over a week, apparently waiting for travellers or merchants who might share the road with him, wisely not wanting to travel mostly unguarded roads alone.
