Throw our bow out to him to show our peaceful intent. Have Veila do all diplomacy from now on.

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Though you're ready to set this misunderstanding aside and take a risk for peace your companions do not yet know that, and are already moving against the threat. Maegor throws his fish spear and advances at a steady even pace. The makeshift javelin clips past the edge of the man's shield and hits his shoulder, though it fails to sink far into the man's flesh. Veila charges axe raised high, but her desperate target kicks the obstructing table over towards her, delaying her long enough for him to throw his second javelin, this one aimed for Maergor, though it misses entirely.

In turn you toss down your bow and plaintively ask everyone to stop fighting, attesting that the flight of your arrow was a mistake. 1d20 -3(almost no diplomatic experience) +2(target is outmatched) -4(target has been wounded by companions) +2(surrendered a weapon)= 1

Try to knock him upside the head with our helmet. Tell our companions that we ought to try and not kill him.

Removing your cap with the intention of using it to bludgeon your opponent, you yell out to your companions to try not to kill him. Shield still at the ready, the man draws his long knife and prepares to receive attack. Veila reaches him first, nimbly leaping over the rotten, broken table in her way. Letting his guard down for just a moment, the man moves to slash at Veila at her approach, but Veila is faster and manages to take advantage of his momentary lapse in guard.
In an instant, her axe is buried in his skull, remaining there as he falls. A look of shock and horror is frozen on Veila's face, the first time she's killed a man, and the first time you've seen a man die. He twitches spasmodically on the ground before ceasing all movement with a deep exhalation.

The fight apparently over, Maergor turns to you, a dark look on his face. "I count twice that your actions here nearly got one of us killed. Learn the lesson." He turns away from you, shaking his head in frustration.

That... clearly went far from what we would have liked to do. On the bright side, none of us was truly hurt and from an ooc point of view we got loot. On the other hand, this might not be good for our relations with our companions.

Own up to our mistake.
Try to calm Veila, admitting that it was our own mistake that got the mess started, that she only did what the situation called for. Shouldering the task of unlodging and cleaning her axe would be a nice touch, as far as I am concerned.

Else, well, looting time trying to make heads or tails of the man. A "fighter" in a bad state, without supplies? For all we know, he might be one of those bandits that got away. Even though those guys were north of us, our traveling schedule is not that brisk that a man driven by fear could not catch up to us.

Actually, bring the corpse inside, close his eyelids, and tell that we will burry him in the morning. I don't think we should search his corpse or even loot it before then.

Search his corpse for valuables!

We just watched a man die - from violent causes, at least - for the first time. Thinking about loot from an IC perspective, would stamp us as some kind of loony, dont you think?
Not that I don't share the "yay, loot" sentiment from an ooc point of view. Those javelins should do good in Maergor's hands, plus his stuff will be good barter in the next village. Come morning, allright? ;3

Comfort Veila. Its a shock killing someone, especially when we were trying not to.

"Lets move the corpse into a closed off room. We'll have a ceremony for the man."

Move to Veila and whisper to her...

"Everything is fine none of this was your fault, It was mine."

Feeling guilty, you promise to do better, and do what you can to comfort your shocked friend, ushering her inside by the fire to stay dry. 1d20 -3 (almost no diplomatic experience) +2 (your friend) = 13
She seems assuaged by your assurances that she did what she had to, and that the weight of the man's death lies on your shoulders, but she says little, and you doubt you will get many words out of her tonight. After you've done all you can to help Veila you and Maergor drag the man's corpse inside out of the rain and the mud, to fetch Veila's axe and see what you can make of the man. From what you can see of his things they are sturdy, but worn by travel and perhaps combat. Maergor points out that his shield bears the remains of some paint, as if something had been painted there and then been intentionally scratched off.

"A deserter i think, by the looks of him a northerner, maybe running from the local conflict." Maergor grimaces. "I want to judge him, but who's to say he was abandoning his countrymen or running from injustice? We will likely never know."

That night, after you've supped, partially because the party needs the distraction and partially because you've been meaning to ask anyway you talk to Maergor about the perceptions of magic among the local people. "It varies. In the larger towns and cities it's pretty common for conjurers and hedge mages to sell their craft for a living, though true sorcerers are not common. It's harder to hate your neighbors, but in some places... In the older places magic can be a dark thing, and it can be hard not to hate and fear that which occassionally comes out of the night and takes children." At that Maergor grows quiet, and you know that when Maergor grows quiet it's hard to get him speaking again, so you prepare for the night's sleep.

...

When morning comes everyone seems to feel a little better. Veila in particular has a steely look in her eyes, an improvement from the uncharacteristic lapse she was in the night before. The rain has mostly abated, though there is a light drizzle and the sky is still grey and overcast. You shoo rats away from the corpse of the Deserter as you come down to take stock of his possessions and figure out what to do with him. You had a mind to bury him, but after thinking on it you realize you don't have a shovel of any kind, making digging any kind of grave a truly arduous undertaking.

His possessions included his three steel tipped javelins along with a convenient leather strap for them to be easily carried and retrieved from his back, long sharp steel knife, fur cloak, wooden shield, a coinpurse holding three more of the same kind of silver coin you possess, and a makeshift sackcloth bag carrying only a light bundled wool blanket and a pair of knuckle bone dice. The cloak would be useful to either of your companions, Maergor in particular is wearing light clothing. The man's makeshift bag is small, capable of holding only a little more.
