Well, judging how the sorceress approached the village, one might think mages don't show themselves to be capable of magic all too easily. Minus maybe very powerful indidviduals, offical posts issued by some goverment, or even a magiocracy. Since we are quite far from all of these, we would lack common sense if we would not protect us on our travels. Or sell the stuff later on.

+1 to
Equipping the caps, bracer, and sword
Taking the iron spearheads - or any tradeworthy iron left in the armory, really - as tradegoods.

I'd actually don't think it all that a good idea to teach veila how to read, as this would take weeks of time, and leave our studies of magic more disturbed than ever.
-1 to teaching veilia how to read

On another note, I would like to hear what Maergor has to say about magic, and what impression the general populace outside of our small village has of it. Caus' if it is "Burn the witch/warlock" we really should know, and act accordingly. Or rather, avoid some actions that would be very stupid, like showing off the empty book by daylight, or us reading it at nighttime / by firelight.

It also might be prudent to make a small makeshift barricade of rotten wood by the doorway. Nothing that would truly hinder an intruder, but enough to give his presence away.

Companions
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You spend some time conflicted over what to do with your newfound treasure, meagre as it is. As you spend time trying to decide your companions add their own thoughts to your own internal debate. Both feel that they are owed a portion of whatever loot the group comes upon, wether it is sold or kept. As part of his own portion Maergor claims one of the spearheads, and notes that neither the helms or bracers look likely to fit him, though Veila is quite pleased to better armour herself, and is happy to claim the cap you offered to Maergor, and says she is willing to return the bracers to you if you want them. As you try on your own cap you find it fits well enough, though a little loosely. It seems like it's meant to be worn with a chin strap, as it is an attacker could knock it off if they put much effort into it.
You search the nearby buildings for anything else, and find only more rats, a few rusted horseshoes and the equally rusted head of an axe. You come upon a bookshelf, but the books within are so moldy and rotten as to be unreadable. On your way back into the tower you bring the broken remains of a table from one of the buildings and prop it upright against the precarious door. Anyone seeking entrance will now have to knock one or the other over.

It's a simple enough matter to catch and kill some rats. After you've butchered and skinned them Maergor is even kind enough to use some fishing line to piece some of the furs together into a makeshift sack. It doesn't smell pleasant, but it will do. Maergor also uses some of the left over rat fur to fashion a crude awkward handle to put over the tang of the sword, mentioning he would be glad to be rid of it and do it again with rabbit fur if you like. As the two of you work it begins to rain heavily, and you are glad to be inside for it. Veila has a fire going already, and had the foresight to gather wood for the night.

The meat of the rats you set aside distastefully, unsure wether you are desperate enough to do anything with it. If you are delayed or stop hunting on the way to this great road then you may be nearly out of food when you get there, and you suppose it's worth entertaining the notion of a distasteful meal now rather than little food later.
With that thought turning over in your mind you hear a voice calling from downstairs, tinged with desperation, with the three of you all gathered round the fire upstairs. "Hello? I... i noticed you moving about earlier. Could i share your warmth? I havn't eaten the past several days and... i'm a fighter, i could protect you?"

Whoever it is, they havn't knocked over the table you placed at the entrance, unless they happen to be particularly quiet. Your companions have already readied their weapons, just in case.

First off, our companions should know that we will gladly share all of our loot with them.
Second, grab our weapons and go down to see who is there.

Indeed - if there are more of them, the doorway provides a good bottleneck from where we can shoot arrows at them. Not sure if Maergor should part with his spear too easily, but eh, no choice if so. Either way, we approach the door with drawn weapons / knocked arrow, the works. We might also want to except them already inside.

If our walk to the door is unhindered, and this self-proclaimed fighter is in as much of a sorry state as his speech would have us believe, sure enough, usher him inside, offer him some of the rat meat, but then we also partake of it. Should his sentiments towards us be of benign nature, we might even take him with us, so we better plan ahead.

First off, our companions should know that we will gladly share all of our loot with them.
+1, for the hopefully peaceful dinntertime. Else, some other time.

Also, no word about the book or magic, and one of us will keep guard with this guy around no matter what.

Whispering to your companions, you tell them to be on gaurd, and not to mention anything about your quest for magic. You knock arrow to bow, and your companions ready weapons, Maergor with his spear in one hand and a fish spear in the other ready to throw, Veila merely holding her axe in two hands ready to swing. You make your way down the stone steps, flanked by your companions.

As you reach the bottom of the steps you see the man, shivering in the rain, just outside the doorway. He's short, but broad, as he looks to you both a look of desperation and a haggard torn beard is clearly visible. His wet clothes and fur cloak cling to him, and he's armed. In one hand a wooden shield, and in the other a javelin ready to throw. At his back are two more, and at his belt lies a long sheathed knife. Seeing you approach armed, he readies his javelin. "Please! I need help."

The man seems truly desperate, and may need to be calmed. Alternatively the risk may not be worth the trouble, it could be better to fire the first shot.

"Clearly were all afraid of the unknown. I am Jehundik Vanyik and these are my fellows Veila and Maegor. We are but simply traveling.

Who are you and why are you here so in need of help?"

Lets find out who these guys are. They may be from the Count's army either here to arrest us or running away from the bandits/crow people. Or they may just be bandits. Either way do not lower our weapon.

Lets find out who is he with a soldier for. If he is a bandit, counts soldier, or maybe trying to trick us.

For clarification, i meant that there are two more javelins on his back, not that there are two more people behind him.

Wet to the skin, and a storm? Well, if we don't let him in, he'll be horribly sick by morning, if not worse. And by worse I mean dead. No wonder he would be desperate.

Still, introducing us, and then taking it from there, sounds about right.

So...

Tell him to drop all of his weapons. If he's really that desperate there shouldn't be a problem.

Once he's inside, search him for any hidden weapons.

I hope this game isn't chasing one person for eons :p

1d20 -4(unskilled in diplomacy) +4(target desperately wants help) +2 (target is outmatched)= 4

You attempt to put a friendly tone in your voice and introduce your companions. Unfortunatly you find that the tension of the situation has gotten the better of you, and your voice quavers and shakes, as does your hand. This quaver causes you to slip, and your arrow flies from your bow. You had not fully drawn it, nor had you taken aim, so the arrow merely skids harmlessly across the ground, but it is enough to ignite the tense situation. With a yelp the man throws his javelin at you, and despite the surprise you manage to avoid the worst of it, though it leaves a mostly superficial cut on your leg as you leap aside.

He's still on the other side of the barricade, a scant twenty or so feet away, his shield raised and already reaching for another javelin on his back. Your companions are springing into action as well. If you still wish for this to end peacefully you doubt you will have another opportunity, though forgoing combat in such a dangerous situation could end badly.
