Look, normally I'm the one to suggest against violence due to the danger involved and because it's so out of character, but in this case violence is most certainly appropriate.

Practical reasons: Our enemies are poorly armed and armoured, we have a ranged weapon so we'll get initiative, we're rather excellent when it comes to using our ranged weapon, we have what looks to be a veteran axeman on our side, we'll soon be reinforced by a rogue and a tank, we suck at diplomacy so peace will probably fail, and even if we do succeed they'll probably attack us at a later date.

Moral reasons: These guys are evil, hostile, our last diplomacy attempt failed, and we have a girl of 11 years to protect.

Shoot that bastard right in his smug prick face.

This situation is a powder keg, and could easily go one way or another. Your companions will take a few moments to rouse, and until then you are outnumbered three to two, in close quarters. You could try to calm the situation, delay, or strike now while no one expects it. What will you do?

I kinda don't think this will fly here - our arrows, I mean. -1 to shooting.

To shoot them, we would need to back off first, which would leave the brewer far more open to their attacks. I also think we should avoid combat if possible, at least for now, while we dont have Maergor and Veila as backup. So... seeing as we do have low diplomacy, a simple threat might work? At worst, it will turn into a taunt, but it should stay as intimidation either way.

Just tell them if they seek trouble, we will have the brewer's back in the matter.

Really, just following up on what Kellay himself already has said. Their intimidation falls flat on us. They either "feck off", or they got it coming.

You had been up reading from your book, and Kellay had been keeping watch, but the two of you rouse your other sleeping companions and rise, readying your weapons in case need arises.
From the sounds of this we already have an arrow knocked in our bow which means we should get a bonus at this range with a bow. Trying to fire another arrow from this close is probably a bad idea but we shouldn't have any problems firing the first one. After we take their leader out, it'll be a guy with a little axe and a guy with a sharp piece of wood versus a guy with a big axe and a guy with a sharp piece of steel.

EDIT: As for getting them to back off, that's a bad idea. I've played or read two different suggestion games where a similar event took place and in both times the enemies came back either in an ambush or with allies. Both times someone important to the protagonist was lost and the protagonist himself was blamed for taking the peaceful route and not attacking when he had a chance.

+1
But If they take even step forward we shoot them in the face then take our weapon out and start stabbing. Also shout to wake up our companions.

We've already woken them up, I think. We're just waiting for them to get ready.

D'aww Thank you ^^. So you know, the floor is open for anyone who wants to message me to ask questions about the plot of Prince, there was a lot going on behind the scenes, and it started to get to the point where i was almost putting as much work into it as my novel. Whiiiiich is part of why i was so flaky about it, and eventually gave up on it. This game is significantly less work so far XD

Edit: It looks like it's a tie, so i'll give it a little more time for someone to pop in and add their own thoughts.
Nevermind, wasn't reading closely enough.

Arrow at the ready you aim right at the face of the leader, you say little, merely adding your threatening presence to that of Kellay. With your companions rousing, and the threat of an arrow sprouting in his face, the threat is apparently enough for the young travellers to reconsider. Distastefully, the ruffians move off before a fight can start, and you breathe a sigh of relief.

When they are out of earshot, Kellay sits back down and spits"Pah! Layabouts kicked out from the backwater hole that spawned them no doubt. If you and yours hadn't been here i may have needed to cave in one of their skulls, and that's not the sort of thing i'd like my girl to see. You've earned your bread i s'pose, but they'll still be watching my ale like carrion birds. Why don't you pay them a visit some time and make sure they know to leave off? I'd pay you, and i'd be willing to put in a good word with some of the folks at Travellers Rest when we get there to let them know you're alright, might help if you're looking for work."

You just found out?  ???

Also I think we should fire off an arrow at the leaders aiming for his stomach. Also yell loudly so as to wake up our fellows for a fight against these guys. Can
't believe were doing this again. Don't bad guys know we just want a break?

EDIT: Ninja'd :(

Er... the possible fight is already over? The brewer just wants us to intimidate them somehow, so that they don't try again.

And for that, we as a woodsman, are quite qualified. Skulking and sneaking is some part of our work.

I'd say, fresh innards, splashed into the face of their leader while they sleep, telling him that it will be his guts the next time he bothers us. Something like that? Only question would be, where to get some innards. If hunting is not allowed in these parts, a bucket of waste should also do.

Well, in short - All for taking Kellay''s offer. Exact method is up for discussion.

Can we write some kind of letter? If possible we could fire off a letter tied to an arrow at his group (not to kill but close enough to see it hit the ground near them). Once they read that they'll understand not to mess with us.

Or we could trow guts on him and act surprisingly creepy to scare them off that way.

+1 to asking Kellay what might scare them off because we evidently don't know.

-1 to actually scaring them off without talking to our companions about it first.

You tell Kellay that you might be willing to undertake such a task, but that you would like to hear from your companions on what they think first, and also that you would be willing to hear any suggestions he might have on how to chase them off. "Their type isn't the bravest of sorts, if you hurt one or two of em they'd know to leave off i'd guess." Again he spits in derision, in the direction that the young ruffians left.
Maergor, rubbing the sleep from his eyes, seems to agree with Kellay's guess. "Aye, we likely wouldn't even have to do the like of any permanent damage if we came upon them by surprise. I'd be willing to give that leader of theirs a few sharp raps to the head in the night and be done with it."

Veila though, seems a little more reserved, and spends some time with her thoughts before sharing them. "An attack in the night could make them dangerous too. If they reacted badly it could force us to kill one of them in defence. If Maergor and i gained their attention in the day i imagine Jehundik could take them from behind while we maintain their attention, he's the lightest of foot among us i think. If we don't deal with them now they could grow bold, and attack Kellay on his way back when we are no longer with them.
