Hmm, on the one hand, it's not our fight. On the other, Veila makes a good point that making friends(or at least, not enemies) with a count's forces would be a wise move. I say, unless it's in completely the opposite direction of where we're traveling to, we go for it.

Ask them what bridge and how big a force is extorting tolls, and explain we're simply travelers passing through but we'd be happy to help if it isn't in the opposite direction of our travel.

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Jehundik Vanyik

Companions
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You explain to the soldier that you are not locals, rather that you are travellers passing south through these lands, and that if this enemy lies to the north you will have to decline his offer of employment in battle. You also mention that information about the enemy forces might help you come to a decision.

The soldier frowns slightly at your words. "The enemy encampment sits on the river north yes, though not at all far that way, and our forces are marshalling at town just as we speak. I urge you to reconsider your policy, for you seem to be travelling lightly, and these are dangerous lands right now. As strangers travelling through these lands we could offer you neither protection nor supply, but as an ally of our lord you would be subject to his protection the same as any free man of the land. It's possible you could even secure yourself a mule or somesuch by coin or plunder, a valuable commodity indeed for a traveller on the road. As for the the Crow's men?" The horsed soldier grins, showing pearl white teeth, and pats the sword at his side appreciatively. "They number no more than fifty, and we will have more attacking them from both sides of the river. Their defences are minimal, and the bridge they took is a ruin, poorly repaired in their desperation to gain a way to cross the river, for we control every other river crossing they might wish to take."

"Ask who the Black crow is?"

If there bandits/ rogue mercenaries than we should help. We shouldn't get tied down with affiliations with people we don't know but we may need to clear this bridge in order to get to that town. That town being our next checkpoint. Lets make every effort to cover our faces so no one recognizes us if we fight for the count.

Ninjad.

He obviously wants us...accept if he's willing to travel with us personally or with part of his troops to our destination. Maybe he's a knight with a holding near our final destination. If so, their protection can be worthwhile. Plus, it'd be nice to help kick the bandits out.

Make it clear though we cannot move With them too far away for our journey is very important.

We should ask again who the Black Crow is.

Woah woah woah! Hold on here guys! Listen, we're just some kid who's left our ultra-peaceful village so we can learn magic. We've never killed anyone or fought anyone in our life and we at least know that Veila hasn't. We really don't have what it takes to do this.

Decline. Our (Jehundik and Veila) upbringings haven't prepared us for any fighting in the slightest.

But if we leave then these Crow guys could continue to raid places near here. Which may mean they could ambush us on the roads one day. An there not going to be as nice it seems :(

We should definetly ask to be an archer though since we were a hunter.

No, those Crows guys AREN'T going to keep on raiding places. Remember, this guy just said the battle against the bandits is gonna be an easy one. Three untrained peasants aren't going to make much of a difference in that regard. We don't even need their protection considering we have Hunter senses and can avoid any trouble. The only reason we were found this time was because we got close to a village.

Still we could use supplies and directions..maybe we can say No and still go to get directions? Otherwise, it's going to be a massive waste of time but meh as long as were safe and we get where we need to be.

I agree we should go for the possible supplies and because they seem might be annoyed if we don't.

Look, we can go to the village and do what we were going to do before but let's not go out of our way to kill people just so some guy we've never met won't get mildly annoyed. Seriously, if some military guy walked up to you right now and offered you some money to kill someone, would you accept? No, you wouldn't, even if you've been on some hunting trips with your uncle or whatever.

EDIT: There's also the fact that this guy might be enough of a douchebag to send us out to fight them before he sends his own men. That will not end well neither for us nor our companions. Oh yeah, our companions, the two people we're supposed to look after and not send to their deaths in exchange for a freaking mule.

+1. Explain that we are peaceful folks. Maybe throw in a "You guys look like you're awesome enough to handle this on your own" flattery-type comment.
