On a whim and fearing the ire of Microsoft for downloading Windows XP -  Even though... well I doubt they care anymore with the EoL announcement. So instead I went with an old development version of Windows, Windows Neptune. I'm a bit sketchy on the details, but it seems like it was developed between Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Windows XP, with the working features being tossed into Windows XP or cut. If you're familiar with Neptune or would like to discuss another niche/obscure OS ( like Haiku or FreeBSD or some weird Mongolian Llama Linux Distro ) this is your thread.

Reading around, it looks like Microsoft didn't plan to completely unify their home and business OSs right away, so following Windows 2000 they were working on two Windows 2000-based successor OSs, one for business and one for home. Neptune was the "home" OS, to replace Windows 98, which had already been announced as the last DOS-based Windows OS. Odyssey was the codename of the business OS. They got merged to become Windows XP, but as it wasn't ready on the original schedule a new "home" OS was hastily thrown together (Windows ME).

So you can think of Neptune as a prototype version of XP Home Edition.

Dwarven blood types are not A, B, AB, O but Ale, Wine, Beer, Rum, Whisky and so forth.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Ah. That's good, I wanted to upgrade to XP anyway, and this is then sort of like that, but with some of the feel of 98, which has the strongest root of my nostalgia for outdated software. It also seems so far to suck a lot less that Windows ME. That said I haven't really done much with it yet, so... We'll see how that goes. One thing that I'd have to deal with no matter what though, is how much I hate internet Explorer. I'm working on finding a compatible version of Firefox or Opera to alleviate that pain. It seems that Opera is being more friendly to that endeavour, so that's where I'll go.

Any OSes you'd like to discuss Thief^?

EDIT: Success.

For a few years I was regularly doing different linux distros, I had a brief period where my school proctored tests required windows AND was able to tell when windows was in a vm so I had to install windows, but I was able to go back to linux and nuke windows back into nothingness again.

Then I discovered the joys of Arch, rolling distribution, built out of the parts I told it to use, so great.

Just be a sensible person and run Linux or Windows 7 or something, unless you enjoy viruses and software not working. Neptune is just going to end with you not being able to install 90% of software.
Well, anything for nostalgia and to spite THAT DAMN MICROSOFTS, right?
(Also this should go in General Discussion, not here)

>_< I thought that's where I was. Ah well, there's always a "Move topic button."
Anyways, I am running Linux and I would be running Windows 7 is Microsoft hadn't bricked it with a botched update that causes it to restart on boot. :| So forgive me if I feel that I have ample reason to spite THAT DAMN MICROSOFTS. I've had a bad history with them. ( Also, since it probably bypassed your notice, I am running it virtually. I wouldn't risk running such an outdated OS on my machine directly... That would break many things and cause a lot of annoyance and pain. And believe me when I say that once I can find a way to reliably patch Windows 7 or an image of it that won't put me at risk of prosecution, I'll be running that. If nothing else, I miss Steam. The Steam for Linux decided to stop working on my distro and I can't seem to pinpoint the problem beyond that it's some disagreement between Steam and the Graphics Drivers. I could just nuke my distro and start over, but I rather like my stuff the way I have it.*

*If you can teach me to merge all my settings, files, and symlinks from my current Slacko Pup to the newest version without breaking absolutely everything or having to do it manually... You wouldn't get much, but you'd have my appreciation.)

Well, theoretically you could just copy your home directory onto an appropriately formatted flash drive to preserve your files and symlinks.
Aren't there backup tools for Linux that you could use? Or you could just try nuking only the graphics drivers.

Also sorry, I was under the impression that you were one of those hardcore XP fans :P

I don't really know how you'd recover a partition bricked in that way. I assume you don't have an install disk ready. Hm.

You should do one of those livestreams where you get as many awful toolbars and viruses as humanly possible, ultimately needing to wipe the virtual install.

I installed Ubuntu and LXDE on my netbook. It was great for a while, and then my wifi stopped working for no reason. The range slowly diminished until I had to have it in the same room as the router, and now it just won't connect even though it can apparently see nearby networks. That's about as much Linux as I'm willing to experience for a while (this is my third install- I've had to redo the installation to fix the same wifi problem before), although I have to admit that it was blazing fast compared to Win7 on the same computer.

...that's one weird ass problem. Sounds like somebody inserted a "fuck you for using Linux" subroutine into wifi software.

Yeah, seems like they did at kernel level too. :p I have the same problem but persistence pays dividends. Not to mention I can always tether to my tablet.
