What would be in an Elder God simulator?
« on: March 02, 2015, 12:23:46 am »

I'm not entirely sure exactly how this thought came to me, but I'm curious, what would go into one?

There you are, minding your own business playing with things-beyond-things when suddenly you get summoned by a bunch of ants.

An elder god simulator in which you are the elder god and know that you're an elder god?  Or... an elder god simulator where you're a human at the keyboard controlling an eldritch beast?  If the former, then basically Sim City upscaled.  The latter, then I can only imagine a screen of pulsating, drifting runes and words (several languages) and urging ideas that lead you towards uncertain and impressive goals.  No clear driving force and overruling chaos, yet somehow these random pieces form to fit your whole accomplishment.

As azathoth, you spend the whole game with a black screen, sleeping.

Press Z to snore loudly, causing unspeakable death and horror elsewhere.

There is a hidden key combo to wake up, but doing so crashes the computer.

Bravo on the mathematician's answer.

Something like That Which Sleeps

Huh.  I knew that existed, but wasn't entirely sure what it was.  Though it seems that the only real type you can be is one that wants to destroy the world.

-snip-

A third way is that you could start out on the lowest rung of the society of Elder Gods, and slowly rise through the ranks higher and higher until you are gambling ownership of universes (maybe an optional multiplayer so that those can be other players?)

...I think I now have an idea for my C# class's final project...

Well it's going to be heavily moddable, so it can be whatever you want it to be. (That said yeah, the ultimate goal of pretty much all the default guys is to destroy/take over the world, though the methods range from war and battle to making the dream world and the real world merge, to converting the entire world into your own realm of light, to freezing the whole world whole).

This sounds like it'd be a funny art game.

Code which bugs out the graphics card.  Developers claim it's because the game is beyond the comprehension of man.

Hold up.  Looking through the Lovecraftian Circle mythos, it appears that we may be thinking of things in a slightly off direction.  Apparently the Elder Gods are benevolent.  The Outer Gods are the malevolent ones.

Eeeeeh. It'd be more accurate to say that beholding them doesn't drive people mad, and that occasionally they might take actions towards humans which aren't explicitly hostile. They're still unknowable, immortal, and beyond our understanding -- the fact that they appear to be less directly inimical doesn't mean that they actually care about humanity rather than that their own goals happen to coincide with aiding humans from time to time.

Likewise, the only Elder God Lovecraft described (Nodens, IIRC) made no reference to his stance on humanity. The 'friendly Elder Gods' thing is a product of later writers in the Mythos -- a lot of this can be laid at the feet of Derleth, who tried to inject a very Christian sort of good/evil duality into the Mythos, where Lovecraft had established it (to put it bluntly) as "the universe is full of terrible things and will never be safe for humanity."

Though it seems that the only real type you can be is one that wants to destroy the world.

Megaton Railfall, currently in development for Oculus Rift, has you saving the world from alien invasion rather conquering or destroying it.

Though I'd say you play more of a Dr. Manhattan expy than an elder god in that.

An Elder God simulator consists of the player character shitting bricks under his bed while the cosmic terrors assault the universe.

Precisely why I said 'Lovecraftian Circle' rather than 'Lovecraft', as the circle is the term used to describe the people that expanded on his works.
