did my Civ get wiped out on my 3rd year of fortress?
« on: February 26, 2015, 10:52:43 am »

third year of my fort and when my caravan arrived from the mountain homes i got this lovely red text, "No outpost liason, how curious..."
Courious indeed, as ive recieved liasons the last two years, i gave generous tributes even afer buying out thier caravans. (glory to armok) Havent been made a barony yet despite having 80 dwarfs on his last visit and 120 on this one.

Maybe a megabeast or goblin attack wiped out my Civ? on embark it wasnt to small, 8 sites or so, and there was another equally large dwarf civ. Plenty of human and elf caravans, complete with thier diplomats. i am on a pocket world at year 100 and i turned savagery, and all titan/magabeast parameters slightly up.

It is possible for the outpost liaison to go missing for several years in a row (it might be that the city it comes from is under siege, or something, I don't really know) with the civ still alive, and then return with a later caravan. You should get some indication from the civ screen, where you'd see if you still have a king/queen, and various assorted useless nobility.

thanks, i still see them in the civ tab with a king so they should be fine. I was hopeful a raging titan fresh with the blood of my king on his hands would head my way, my crafters need somthing new to dwell on.

Ah, your crafters need incessant orders for production of junk from the new king elected in your fort ;)

Notably the amount of nobles doesn't always correspond to the amount of cities. Back when goblins completely steamrolled everything post world generation I remember a dwarven civ that had been reduced to three cities after a short fortress, but still had several rooms full of nobles after I retired the fortress and looked at the mountainhomes as an adventurer.

I figured out after missing mine two years in a row that the outpost liaison wouldn't arrive if there wasn't a path to your depot already open. And my civ is wiped out, it has been for almost a millennia, so the news he brings is always blank. Then I have to listen to the human diplomat brag about all the things his alive and active civilization is doing.

Outpost liaisons arrive independantly of caravans or trade depots. If you have no path to your trade depot then the caravans will only sit near the edge of the map waiting for a trade depot, but you definitely don't need a path to the trade depot for the liaison. My evidence being I never have a trade depot set up the first Autumn, but I always get an outpost liaison.

I'm not sure about the caravan waiting. I've accidentally kept the trade depot entrance closed when the caravan arrived, as well as having trees block the entrance, and that resulted in a message that the wagon bypassed me, but the beast haulers still arrived to generate a reduced trade (incapable of carrying off all the socks worn out during the previous year, though).

Early on (0.40.13 or something like that) I deliberately kept all entrances closed when the caravan arrived, thinking I could open them up when the caravan arrived, but they immediately bypassed my inaccessible site instead.

Maybe it's just coincidence. It the path wasn't open, no liaison, reload and open path, liaison arrives. The human diplomat always arrives separately from their caravan regardless of whether the path is open.
