Let's Create a Tabletop RPG - Pirate Themed!

So, a while ago I created a pirates RTD, for which I designed a couple rudimentary systems. That game has since sunk, but why let those systems go to waste? Let's take those and build upon them

Here's our starting point:


Resource System:
-Every crew member consumes 1 unit of food and 1 unit of water per day, by default, but might choose to forgoe for whatever reason
-Barrels hold 20 units each
-For every day without food or water, a crew member gains increasing penalties. After 3 days without water, the crew member must roll against dehydration with increasing DC or die. After 10 days without food, the crew member must roll against starvation every day with increasing DC.
-Some food items are perishable, days to spoil depends on the item. Meats can be preserved with 1 unit of salt per 5 of meat.
-Booty/money/treasure gives bonuses to purchase rolls
-Ammunition is tracked

Encounter/Travel System:
-Travel mode: days to reach a destination depends on distance and ship speed.
-For every day of sailing that passes, supplies are deducted and a roll for encounter is made
--First, roll to see if there is an encounter
--If there is an encounter, several rolls to see what it is from the encounter table/tree
--Encounters include such things as merchant ships, civilian ships, other pirate ships, Navy ships, plague ships, monster-infested ships, ghost ships, wrecks, derelicts, sea monsters, reefs/other hard to see obstacles, and inclement weather (though weather might need its own system)

Well, I won't be running a game in this thread, but we will be designing systems here.

There should be a .0001 chance to be abducted by aliens as an encounter.
Sure, why not? The game I'm building on here was a light-hearted historical fantasy, but ideally this game should support a variety of piratey settings and tones.

So... one thing I have absolutely no idea on is the combat system. The way I see it, there are probably two layers to it - ships and individuals. The RTD system made a fun and exciting mess, but here we're going to need something more structured. Thing is, I have 0 experience designing a good combat system, and very little experience with tabletop combat in general.

Which brings up stats. In the RTD, people had only their inventories and ship roles (along with behaviors provided by RP), and the skills were just abstracted from that. Here, we'll probably need to come up with more structure as well.

Firstly, do we want a realistic damage system (Arms, Legs, that kind of thing) or do we want a hit point system? If we choose realistic, we can use a system like in Foot Soldiers, where you roll to decide where you hit. This could also be the case with ships.

Also, diseases should be a factor, as that was a common problem.

Oh yes, definitely diseases! And breaking down health into body parts = more fun for ship's physician. On the other hand, perhaps it would be better to streamline?

I tried to design a combat system like that once. Give me a sec while I find my notes.

EDIT: Ah, here it is. It combines injuries of individual body parts with pseudo-traditional HP to provide the best of both worlds.

Is combat going to be mapped out on a board? Or is everything going to be abstracted to text? The basic gist of the travelling mechanics make it seem like it would be text-only, with some pictures probably just for flavor. I also wholeheartedly support this thread. Pirates are cool, if only for the fact that they all ate limes to fight off the scurvy.

Anyone of the equivalent to the royal bloodline in a nomadic group would have a sun tattooed on their hand, or a scrotum on their forehead (it's a little-known fact that fraternities are based off of long-forgotten tribes).
