Let's try to sense the cat ourselves, but have our spirit look around on its own as well.

Can anyone else see or touch our spirit, though? It'd be bad to have him captured while we look for a cat.

time for some good ol' Psychometry!
Let's try to sense the cat ourselves, but have our spirit look around on its own as well.

Time for some good ol' psychometry! You place your hand on the child's head and close your eyes, tracing the path his aura had made throughout the area.

You can see where people had walked through the alley, including the child. If his cat has been around him for extended periods of time, there would be some cross-contamination that you could use to your advantage. After a moment, you isolate what you believe to be his cat's aura and sic Harl on it.

Harl always got along well with cats. You suspect it's because he has the same mix of egotism, sadism, and good intentions as felines do.

You make a show of searching around with the boy while waiting for Harl to return. After fifteen minutes, a scruffy, yellowish-brown cat trots into the alley and purrs loudly as it rubs itself along the child's legs. Invisible to the naked eye, Harl slinks out of the cat and back to you as the boy scoops up the cat, which continues purring loudly.

You mentally add divination to your list of things you are the best at.

We are good at so much! We should explore more magic, and see if we're bad at anything.

Conjure an Imp to talk to
-1. Harl might get jealous. Offer to walk the boy home.

+1. Also ask him for his name.

You ask him what his name is. It turns out it's Kaden. You ask him if he knows how to get home from here. He nods and you begin walking him through the slums, following his directions. Eventually you reach a dilapidated tenement building, and he thanks you for helping him find Scamps before scurrying into the building, cat in tow.

Try to see if we can buy a house.

Or we could find an inn. That'd be cheaper.

This city is so poor we might get lucky and buy some property for pretty cheap. It doesn't even have to be very good since we can just fix it with magic.

Maybe we could find some poor guy's place and offer to fix it up for him in exchange to be roomies. That'll be compassionate and we'll get a house.

Sure, but let's also see how much it costs to buy one outright. Nothing bad can come from knowing.

This looks pretty great.

This sounds like fun! +1. And if that doesn't work, try an inn.
