I DM a homebrewed DnDish type thing with a group of friends IRL set in a setting called Vesohin. Two things: 1) I need practice writing, and B) I really enjoy working on the setting and want to share it with you all. SO LET'S GET RIGHT INTO THIS, SHALL WE

How it works:
The rules of this game are simple. Sometimes you will be limited to a few choices, but for the most part you'll have free reign to suggest and vote on actions. Success will be determined by a combination of hidden d20 rolls, basic character traits determined at the beginning of the game, and DM fiat (if a suggestion is really clever or wouldn't pose a real problem for the character, it'll be much more likely to succeed). There will be a lot of lore in the game, but most of it will be tangential at best and it's only there for my benefit (I'm still fleshing out the world, so it's fun to write fluff) and to let you guys explore the world more effectively (so that you'll know what your character would know without having to specifically ask about every little thing).

Alright, three sentences of rules is plenty, let's get into the game.

The candle cast a faint orange glow across the room, shadows pooling in every crack and crevice of the old desk where it rested. Surrounding it were neat stacks of loose papers, quills, letters, and all manner of odd trinkets. The chair creaked as an old man sat down and pulled back the hood of his cloak. His face was weathered and wrinkled by his years, but his right eye gleamed with intelligence and vitality while his left eye was obscured by a strip of cloth wrapped around his head. He reached out and drew an old book across the table towards him, flipping through the pages. After a moment of searching he paused, scanning the densely packed runes for a break in the text. Picking up a quill, a faint smile creased his face...

You've lived in the vast forests of the Cialagh your whole life. You are a...

2. Woman

...by the name of...

<What is your name? (First name only)>

You were born into a family of the clan...

1. Tiras: Clan Tiras lies on the western edge of the Cialagh, on the shores of the Northern Sea. The clan is one of the strongest militarily, and holds sway over many of the surrounding clans. They primarily use their power to gain wealth through tributes and trading, but they also maintain order. Before their rise, bloody clan wars often tore the region apart. Since Tiras rose to power, clans have been much more leery about gathering allies and marching to battle. The clan originated in the bitterly cold north, and is proud of its heritage.
2. Quinn: Clan Quinn is native to the foothills along the northern edge of the Cialagh. In the mountains, powerful spirits* make their homes, and living in the foothills is dangerous. Nevertheless, the people of Quinn survive through tenacity and stoic fortitude. Fortunately for them, their mines produce enough iron and silver to draw the attentions (and wealth) of the surrounding clans, most of which the clan is on good terms with. Most of them.
3. Fealen: Clan Fealen controls a swath of land in the southeast corner of the Cialagh. The area is peaceful and pastoral. The only spirits to menace them are minor pests on the level of rats or rabbits. Their economy revolves around herding in the open meadows that appear the farther south you travel in the forest. However, just past the mountains to the south lie foreign lands, and the barbaric spirits there are greater and more terrible than any that menace the clans. But they never travel past the mountains. ...Right?

* In Vesohin, 'spirits' is a catch-all term that can refer to fairies, elementals, demons, and everything in between. They range from common and weak, like sprites or brownies, to ancient and deadly on the level of colossal elementals and demon lords.

Since we only have two votes on the last questions and the next questions aren't dependent on the previous ones, I'm gonna go ahead and post the next set without closing voting for the others.

Growing up, your childhood was...

1. Perfect. Your parents loved you dearly and you strove to be a good child. You weren't necessarily well-liked by the other kids, but nobody bullied you.
2. Average. Your parents loved you and cared for you to the best of their abilities, flawed and human though they were, and you acted much like any other child.
3. Troubled. Your parents were apathetic at best. Other children bullied you mercilessly. You still have scars on your hand from a particularly vicious incident involving the village bully and a burning stick.

As a child, you enjoyed...

1. Play-fighting! You would often face off against the other kids in mock-duels with sticks as swords and pans as shields.
2. Exploring! You loved to wander through the forests and imagine what might be just around the next corner - often to your parents' consternation.
3. Listening to stories! Whenever a minstrel or entertainer would pass through the village, you would be the first one there to hear both news from the outside world and old tales of heroes and villains.
4. Bullying others. You might have been bullied sometimes, but really, you were the village bully.
5. Helping others! You could usually be found wherever there was a need. Helping with chores, farmwork, and, more than anything else, helping the clan's druid heal the wounded.

Your father was a...

2. Blacksmith
3. Shepard
4. Trader
5. Trapper
6. Druid

Your name is Siob of Fealen. Your youth was troubled, to say the least. Your mother was absent and your father, one of the blacksmiths of the village, was a drunkard. As his only child, you often had to help him with his work, particularly when he was recovering from a hangover. As unpleasant as his angry, swearing company was, you did grew up with a decent knowledge of metalworking.

Your one solace was exploring. You would often wander into the woods and imagine what you might find, although you usually didn't find anything that interesting. Well, at least not close to home. One afternoon, though, you had walked much farther than normal and found yourself somewhere you'd never seen before: a clearing with stone pillars circling a pedestal. Curious and fearless, you approached the pedestal and saw the glimmer of metal in the dying light of day. Resting upon the cold stone was a silver pendant, with an engraving of a bird of some sort.

You took it, of course. You still have it to this day.

Though you come from the humble clan of Fealen, you dream that one day you might be a renowned explorer, charting new lands and uncovering ancient secrets!

Of course, it will take some time to reach that status, especially considering where you are currently. Where were you, again...?

1. Abhach, the largest town in Fealen's holdings.
2. Travelling west towards Tiryn, the capital of the Tiras clan and the largest city in the region.
3. Lost out in the Cialagh. You're still working on this 'exploring' thing.

<Also, describe your physical appearance. You are currently, for the sake of expedience, eighteen years old.>

We are Travelling west towards Tiryn. We also have Angular Facial Features, Red Hair and a beard.

You had decided that the best opportunities lay westwards, in the famous city of Tiryn. Throughout the Cialagh, settlements are small and spread out, but Tiryn is a port city, and much more consolidated than usual. Traders and travelers from across the known world and beyond passed through there, and you know that there are good leads there. You can feel it. You always had a knack for that sort of thing.

Prior to leaving, you had sold many of your more permanent possessions and prepared for the journey. Now you have only your rucksack (which contains food, a few articles of clothing, and a few small items to barter with), the clothes on your back, and, of course, the bird pendant around your neck. It makes you a little homesick, but it also reminds you of your dream.

After a nine long days of travelling with a group of merchants, you have finally arrived at the city of Tiryn. As you crest the last hill and the city comes into view, you stand in awe for a moment. The cool sea breeze brushes along your face and you smell the salty coastal air for the first time in your life. You begin walking again, down towards the city and towards your new life.

The scratching of the quill halted and he pushed the book away. He gently plucked a sheet of paper from one of the stacks on the desk and glanced over the illegible scrawl across it. Nodding slightly, he set the page back down, reached for the book, and began flipping through it. On a different page, he began to write again...
