I DM a homebrewed DnDish type thing with a group of friends IRL set in a setting called Vesohin. Two things: 1) I need practice writing, and B) I really enjoy working on the setting and want to share it with you all. SO LET'S GET RIGHT INTO THIS, SHALL WE
How it works:The rules of this game are simple. Sometimes you will be limited to a few choices, but for the most part you'll have free reign to suggest and vote on actions. Success will be determined by a combination of hidden d20 rolls, basic character traits determined at the beginning of the game, and DM fiat (if a suggestion is really clever or wouldn't pose a real problem for the character, it'll be much more likely to succeed). There will be a lot of lore in the game, but most of it will be tangential at best and it's only there for my benefit (I'm still fleshing out the world, so it's fun to write fluff) and to let you guys explore the world more effectively (so that you'll know what your character would know without having to specifically ask about every little thing).
Alright, three sentences of rules is plenty, let's get into the game.
The candle cast a faint orange glow across the room, shadows pooling in every crack and crevice of the old desk where it rested. Surrounding it were neat stacks of loose papers, quills, letters, and all manner of odd trinkets. The chair creaked as an old man sat down and pulled back the hood of his cloak. His face was weathered and wrinkled by his years, but his right eye gleamed with intelligence and vitality while his left eye was obscured by a strip of cloth wrapped around his head. He reached out and drew an old book across the table towards him, flipping through the pages. After a moment of searching he paused, scanning the densely packed runes for a break in the text. Picking up a quill, a faint smile creased his face...You've lived in the vast forests of the Cialagh your whole life. You are a...
1. Man2. Woman...by the name of...
<What is your name? (First name only)>You were born into a family of the clan...
1. Tiras: Clan Tiras lies on the western edge of the Cialagh, on the shores of the Northern Sea. The clan is one of the strongest militarily, and holds sway over many of the surrounding clans. They primarily use their power to gain wealth through tributes and trading, but they also maintain order. Before their rise, bloody clan wars often tore the region apart. Since Tiras rose to power, clans have been much more leery about gathering allies and marching to battle. The clan originated in the bitterly cold north, and is proud of its heritage.
2. Quinn: Clan Quinn is native to the foothills along the northern edge of the Cialagh. In the mountains, powerful spirits* make their homes, and living in the foothills is dangerous. Nevertheless, the people of Quinn survive through tenacity and stoic fortitude. Fortunately for them, their mines produce enough iron and silver to draw the attentions (and wealth) of the surrounding clans, most of which the clan is on good terms with. Most of them.
3. Fealen: Clan Fealen controls a swath of land in the southeast corner of the Cialagh. The area is peaceful and pastoral. The only spirits to menace them are minor pests on the level of rats or rabbits. Their economy revolves around herding in the open meadows that appear the farther south you travel in the forest. However, just past the mountains to the south lie foreign lands, and the barbaric spirits there are greater and more terrible than any that menace the clans. But they never travel past the mountains. ...Right?
* In Vesohin, 'spirits' is a catch-all term that can refer to fairies, elementals, demons, and everything in between. They range from common and weak, like sprites or brownies, to ancient and deadly on the level of colossal elementals and demon lords.Siob comes from the Fealen clan. Her childhood was troubled, but she found solace in exploring the forest. She's fairly competent at metalworking due to helping her father, who was a blacksmith. She dreams of one day being a legendary explorer.
She's a thin, agile girl with angular facial features and long red hair.
Basgi hails from the northern Quinn clan. His childhood was idyllic and peaceful, but he longed for the glory of battle and heroics. While he's not the sharpest tool in the shed, he's a reasonably competent tracker due to lessons from his father, a trapper. His goal in life is to become the greatest warrior in all of the clans.
He's a tall, muscular lad with sandy blonde hair and the beginnings of a luxurious beard.
Lurm is a member of the powerful Tiras clan. His childhood was full of wonder at stories and magic, which inspired him to pursue his dream of becoming a great wizard. His father was a druid, and from that Lurm gained an understanding of spirits and rituals.
He's a thin man of average height, with short black hair and a serious expression.
