The campaign, from what I understand, is only playable as the Imperial Navy. You play as a captain, rising in ranks, to help defend the Gothic sector from Abaddon's fleet, Ork raids, Eldar and seditious Imperial forces. I think the missions are randomly generated so in a way it's a bit like X-COM. It says you have 50 planets to defend and you seem to have to choose which planets to defend as they give different bonuses (Say, if a farming planet gets conquered it will increase rebellion chances across other planets).

Imperial being Imperial Guard?

That fucking sucks.  If you're into imperial guard you're legally required to change your username to something pseudo-Russian and replace your avatar with a guy in a gas mask and never, ever, ever, talk about anything else.

I find it funny that WH40K started as a sort of over-the-top satire of theocratic fascism in the same sense as Judge Dredd etc. Then it devolved into takings it own EPICNESS seriously, when it was originally a joke to ridicule the whole fascistic ethos. Now some fanbois seem to take the whole mess seriously and end up idolizing fascism. The circle of life?

While it may have devolved into taking fascism and such seriously (which is not really that bad thing, fascism should be taken very seriously), I highly doubt that anyone (maybe except some Russians) actually do idolize fascism because of Wh40k. Indeed, some parts of the Imperial stuff aren't really that bad, but in general we don't really mean it when we say someone should be executed for some stuff they say over internet.

Unless, of course, they are a heretic. Being a heretic must be punished.

Patch 6316 Notes - 16th March 2016
Greetings Admirals!

The first patch (6316) for the beta is now live.

We have been focused on ironing out the particularly major technical issues, so this patch is mainly made up of bug fixes:

Bug Fix
- Fixed a major crash occurring when finding an opponent in matchmaking
- The game now detects QWERTY/AZERTY keyboards properly
- Fixed an issue affecting the gamma option which didn’t behave properly
- The AI cannot drop bombs outside the game area anymore
- Transport ships now have their own icon in the deploying phase
- Fixed a bug causing the “Execute” button to display as “Cancel Warp”
- Fixed an issue that allowed players to go below 0 HP
- Fixed a graphical issue that affected disrupting bombs
- Fixed an issue affecting the display of tooltips on Chaos ships with a favor.
- Fixed an issue causing the ending cameras in multiplayer to be focused on empty space
- Fixed a graphical issue causing Chaos turrets to be red instead of green
- Fixed an issue causing some players to be immune to taunt
- Fixed an issue causing the camera being able to follow an invisible ship if it was focused on it beforehand
- Chaos battleships are now able to use Tzeench and Slaneesh favors.

GUI
- Added multiple tooltips on various elements, including fleet composition in pre-game
- Ordnances skills « Bombers » and « Assault boats » now indicate the number of attack crafts are launched per Launch Bay, as well as the number of Fighters that escort them.
- The “Critical Damages” icons have been moved

Balancing
- All ships have had their troop value increased by 10 points, making it harder to crit through assault actions

Oh I didn't refer to the heretic-must-be-executed meme, which I think is from 4chan and nobody takes anything seriously on 4chan I hope. Just general musings on the changes I've noticed in the fanbase during the decades. That is a boon of being old and grumpy, I can grumble about things that have nothing to do with anything.

Imperial being the Imperial Navy. The Space Marines, funnily enough, don't do space much. They do have their ships in some form (a DLC with them is in fact the preorder bonus), but with naval scales we're talking about gigantic vessels with tens of thousands of crewmen, you can't really invest 10,000 Space Marines in a single one. They're too rare and precious for that, and I think the average Chapter's around a thousand Marines strong. I presume SM vessels have Marines in key command positions, but the bulk of the crew is (likely cherry-picked) Imperial Navy ratings.

As for the game, I caved and purchased with the GMG 10+20% discount. Haven't played much, but the combat appears to be quite fun, and sort of reminded me of Pirates! But obviously with more variables (skills, upgrades, etc.) per ship.

I'm really hoping for a properly dynamic campaign, with perhaps fixed ultimate goals and the occasional story mission, but mainly a fluid strategic map and a bundle of random missions and emergent gameplay inbetween.

Space Marine ships are actually mostly crewed by Chapter serfs which, in the case of some Chapters, are literally slaves. Most of the Chapter fleets have no connection to the navy. Their ships specialize in orbital bombardment and assault, since that is what they are supposed to do. The Imperial division of power limits the marines from having too much space power so that, in the case of a mutiny, the navy could in theory blast them from the skies.

Edit: This would actually make a pretty good Star Trek game. There are already transporters and cloaking devices and torpedoes etc in the game. I wonder what the modding potential is like.

Orks are surprisingly fun to play, but require a lot of micro. Basically you have to keep maneuvering them by hand constantly for the best ramming chances and because of many forward weapons. This can be a problem with large fleets. In that sense, Chaos is the easiest to play due to long-range weapons and agile ships.

I have a feeling Eldar will be the one requiring most manual management though due to their fragile ships.
